Can't install usb driver
I just got a new Zire ( my first, and possibly last Palm product), and am using Win XP pro. It refuses to install the USB driver. During the first install attempt, Windows popped up the new hardware dialog during the initial hotsynch. I cancelled it, but got a "hardware problem" message.
I have tried to repair the installation, remove and reinstall the Palm desktop, and even install the driver separately. I keep getting the new hardware message when starting the hotsynch and it always says there is a problem. It seems Palm has messed up something real good. Any solutions?
Thanks
Tim

Download and install the latest Palm Desktop from palmone.com. I think that there is an update driver for winxp available again from palmone.com.

I was having problems too.
This is what worked for me.
1. Delete all Palm software.
2. Install Palm Desktop.
3. When it comes time for the first HotSync, the hardware installation wizard will start. Let it run in the background until finished.
4. Finish installing the Palm Desktop.
It finally works.
This may not work for you, but it seemed to do the trick on my system. (XP Pro)

I tried that also, but it ended up with the problem hardware message. I sent an e-mail to palm, so I'll see what they say.

I had a discussion with a Palm service rep. he concluded that since it will only hotsynch once after a new install, the problem is that Win XP keeps dropping the driver. The cause is incompatibility with the motherboard. It's a highly-rated Asus P4PE mboard, and this is the only device that I 've had problems with.
I'm dissapointed with Palm, I thought they had better quality products that this...

I've had nothing but problems with Asus motherboards and USB. I used to use Asus boards exclusively, but now that USB is everywhere, I avoid them like the plague.
