Zire?

What's up with palm's new Zire handheld. Palm, I believe, said that all accesories would work with their new line of handhelds. From what I see, there is no universal connector for the Zire. Besides, why would anyone by that, it has a 16mhz proccesor, sure its rechargible but that makes no difference to me. What do you think about the new handheld?

Well, it is important to realise the Zire is aimed at a completely different market. It is for people who never thought of buying a PDA before, who see a Zire in it's blister pack at the supermarket.

POalm figure that no-one who gets a Zire is going to buy accessories or install much software past a few simple games, so it doesn't need the cradle, doesn't need an SD slot, only has 2Mb of RAM.

In particular, no-one on Brighthand is going to want to get a Zire!

Looka t it this way - my old Palm Pro is all the PDA 80% of people would ever need, so Palm are producing a machine of the same spec. A few nice touches like the better screen and the rechargeable battery and the nice looks, but essentially this is the most entry level PDA there is.

The $100 is just the launch price, and it will rapidly go down from there. After Christmas most people expect it to be at least $75 and maybe even lower.

I'm not sure about the "new user" market that everybody is claiming the zire is for, I personally currently still use my Palm Pro with its massive 1mb of memory and although at times I have to remove the odd old record i'm fine.

Now with the Zire I see the perfect oppurtunity to upgrade (oh did I mention i'm a bit of a tight bast@rd ). It's small has double the memory , i'm not bothered about a backlight (the one on my Pro has been squeeling whenever used for the past eighteen months anyway) and built in rechargable battery which beats the 2 AAA's that get chewed up in my current palm on a regular basis.

I'll reserve final judgment until I actually see one but just thought i'd chuck in my ?0.02p's worth

A good point, people whjo have been using an old PDA for years will find the Zire a potential upgrade. The screen, for example, will seriously impress you in terms of it's contrast compared to the PPro.

Same here! I don't know if alot of people realise this, but the m100 was a very good sucess for Palm - despite the fact that people were having the same conversations about it as they are the Zire now.
