Default Sync Zire 72 Contact and Outlook 2003 Contact

I have Outlook 2003 and Palm Zire 72. PalmOS 5.2.8. I have been able to set them up so they do sync. But... I use the Hot sync manager-Custom-Contacts-Change-Settings-Advanced-custom field mapping. In the Phone Priority I put the email fields, all 7 of them at the bottom of the list. In the Custom Field Mapping I matched the 3 outlook email fields with the first 3 Palm custom fields. The 4th custom field on Palm I matched with web page field on Outlook. So when I do a Sync with an email address on my Palm and not in Outlook, the address is not transffered to Outlook. When I do a Sync and the email address is in Outlook and not on my Palm, it is transfered to my Palm.I have the contact Sync set to "Synchronize the files" Any idea on how I can get my Outlook email address to sync with my Palm?

    Thanks,
    Joey

You are using the Palm desktop download to sync with Outlook?

I believe you may only be able to transfer from Outlook to the Palm handheld with those conduits, if at all.

I recall that there was an issue with the Custom fields on the Palm handheld being able to sync with only the Palm desktop.

It has been a while since I setup the Palm desktop, but never did set to sync with Outlook after an issue with my IIIXE caused a lost of data along with truncated noted and that was with PocketMirror.

I do recall that if field names are changed on the Palm, they must be spelled identically to the fields on the Outlook side, including Capitalization. Yet that may be for Outlook to Palm, not Palm to Outlook.

My TX has a 4th field listed as Special:, I think it may not transfer data beyond the first three, just as Birthday field is not transferred from handheld to desktop.

    Any others with OL experience?

It has been a very long time so my memory is fuzzy. I never synced to Palm Desktop (T2, TX) but always synced to Outlook. However, I used Beyond Contacts which uses it's own PIMs and conduits and, because of that, achieves great accuracy with Outlook, including allowing nlimited categories. I never used a lot of custom fields, but I suspect it does fine with those. I think there is a free trial.

I never tried Keysite from Chappura, but I would be surprised if it didn't do pretty well.

I hope I m answering your question. I use the Sync "program" off of the Zire 72 disc to manage syncing between my handheld and Outlook.
My calendar syncs back and forth no problem.

    That is what i suspected.

Palm created the Outlook hotsync you are likely utilizing, but never supported the product beyond the standard calendar, phonebook, and ToDo. And then only it worked if installed correctly, and did not work if not install correctly.

In my reply I indicated and issue regarding spelling and such, that did not involve the custom fields, but it did affect the CATEGORIES names.

I do not have Outlook available on any of my PCs to test for you. My work is OL2007, but without admin rights, I can not and do not have Palm hotsync available to use.

If you do have the OL version of a record transferring correctly, you are good, remembering to make changes on the PC side. Then again it may involve the naming convention, not the field position of the record.

Outlook to Palm does not care, but Palm to Outlook does, as Outlook will not allow data to be blasted into a record unless it has a known place.

    All the best.

Thanks for your help. Listing and adding emal addresses from the Outlook side may be just the way I will have to manage it. I did have fun setting up the categories name and getting them to work. But now they do.

For this working system, Outlook / Palm OS v.5.2.8, you don't need to assign custom fields to the fields you wanna sync.

Regarding email fields, on the Outlook side: Outlook has 3 default email fields, you may already know that, that are best if used as the only 3 maximum email fields for any given contact. On the Palm side: these email addresses from Outlook simply sync into the available multi-purpose fields in the Palm contacts entry, that can be used either for phone numbers or email addresses. On this side of the system, you don't have specially assigned email fields as in Outlook, but they do sync to the latter if properly selected as Email. Remember that there's a maximum of these fields that can default sync to Outlook. For Palm OS v.5.2.8, I'm not sure if there's a maximum of 7 multi-purpose fields that can be synced; that'll depend on the specific version of the Contacts app, that in my Zire 31, that has Palm OS v.5.2.8, is Contacts v.1.1. Now, if on Palm OS, you assign more than 3 email addresses to a given contact, the first 3 detected will sync to Outlook's default email fields, but the fourth will be sent to an Outlook custom field named Email Address 4 or something, the specific name will vary according to your Outlook version and selected language.

Regarding webpage: I'm not very sure that your Palm OS instalation (v.5.2.8) has Contacts v.1.1, but if it does, you already have an assigned field in Palm OS for the website. On the Outlook side, the field that syncs with the latter is the default web site field, the one that shows with a contacts' entry closed, that happens to be the Organization's Web Site field. The latter is an arbitrary assignation, therefore for a contact entry where you wish to place a personal web site, i.e. www.facebook.com/john.doe, there's no practical difference when you sync it to Palm OS. If your Contacts version in Palm OS does have this assigned field, then you don't need to use a custom field to sync amongst. Most probably, your attempt to sync this web site field among Outlook and Palm OS, is failing because there's already a field assigned for the purpose, and the Palm device doesn't know what to do with the newer custom field, so kill said use by renaming the custom field as such in the Palm device and let it work along with Outlook as previously described.

    Please post back any progress
