duplicate program on palm
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has any idea why, at times, a program from my SD card is inadvertantly copied to my hand held. And when I delete it from the hand held it wipes out all the data from the program on the SD card. For instance, high scores or bookmarks from the program remaining on the SD card and it is if I am starting the game for the first time.
I have even tried removing the SD card before deleting the program from the handheld.
I hate to have to start over on certain games and I hate to have the same game taking up memory on both handheld and SD card.
Any light shed on this phenomena would be greatly appreciated.

my best guess (this happens mostly with audio players) is that the app only runs properly from RAM. so, it copies itself from the card.

any databeses (.pdb) file will not work from SD-card, even if you copied them using some smart program like Zlauncher or PowerRun - it stiill copies all the date to memory to run from there. Im am not completely sure waht you wanto do, but if you want to delete some specific datebase (game score) you can just go and delete the appropriate .pdb file. If you wanto to save your main memory - you can MOVE some of your apps to SD and "run" from there using programs mentioned above. In this case, it will teake couple of secs to copy program to memory when you lunch it.
Palm Pro->Palm VX-> Zire71-> T3(+3600mah + 5400mah=9000mah battery)
Arguing with an idiot make sure he isn\'t doing the same.

Thank you for responding to my question.
The problem I have is that I keep all my games on and run them off the SD card. After playing the game for a few days all of a suddon the program , of the games is also located on the handheld. Why does it transfer to the palm all on its own? I can run the program off the Sd Card or the Palm and what ever I do on either one affects the same program on the other. Because the program is on both SD card and handheld it takes up memory on both.
Thanks again for your help.

Looking at my Palm's (72) files using "FileZ" at games like Warfare, Inc. I see file names that are the same on both the SD card and on the handlheld itself. It seems to be the same as what you, heiert, are talking about. I have installed Warfare, Inc. on the SD card.
Looking at more details, however, I see that the the file on the SD card is 276 KB and the one on the handheld is 84 bytes. Looking at the attributes the handheld file is a "resource DB," while the actual program files are on the SD.
Clearly the Palm or the program is copying a resource that it need to run to RAM. In my case the resource file is much, much smaller than the actual program.
Are you sure the program is being copied back to the Palm?
Junglemike and Eternal Visitor both told you what was happenning on your palm, if indeed, the program file is being copied over.
The Palm is copying what it need to its own RAM. In your game's case it might be the entire program file. However, that means that your game is not expansion card aware. Your Palm is intelligently doing what it needs for you to run the game.
So having the game on SD card is a waste and you will never be able to truly run that game from the card. But look at the details of those files and see if what is actually happening is what you think, or really the way I described Warfare, Inc. behaves.

Thank you for your help.
After looking at the info on the program, the file size is 672 k on both the hand held and the SD card.
My wife also runs the same games on a Zire 71, from an SD card and does not have the same problem and the games only show up on her SD card.
It does not happen all the time. Just want to save the resources on the handheld the best I can.

So, same Palm -71My wife also runs the same games on a Zire 71, from an SD card and does not have the same problem and the games only show up on her SD card
Same Game
Different behavior means something's different between your two palms
Do you have the same manufacturer's SD card?
Did you put the game into the same folder of the SD card as your wife did on her palm.
Does your Palm crash and hers doesn't?
Do you have any hacks that she doesn't?
Try your SD card in her palm and see if the same thing happens.

Hmmm .. you weren't using PowerRUN to run that game from the card, were you? If you for any reason reset the Palm without exiting the program, PowerRUN would not have had a chance to delete it from main memory, so you would wind up with a copy on the card AND in main memory. Happens to me every once in a while, and I have to go in with FileMan to clear the leftovers out.
I do what the voices in my head tell me.
