New Zire won't charge after first 2hrs
I'm puzzled. We got a new Zire 71, charged it for a bit over two hours, loaded some software, and now when I place it in the cradle it won't charge. I've done a few soft resets, re-seated the zire in the cradle many times, but no change. The zire beeps in the cradle each time, but no charging.
Ideas?

Okay, I used another cradle and now it's charging just fine.
Second issue. The battery on the new zire charged from 56% to 100% in maybe ten minutes to 4.20 volts. I then took it out and it immediately started dropping a percentage point per second until it got to 70% and just sat there.
Does this sound like a problem or is the battery reading an unreliable measure of charge?

the batery charge indicator tends to perceve a much faster charge rate then the actual one.
Mine does this to. I put it on the charger with a 30% remaining charge and in 15 min the indicator says full charge, but then drops rapidly. (or at least it used to)

I too have been worried about my battery's life. Seems that I have to charge it up everyday or else it dies on me. I'm learning to keep it on the cradle while at home and work.

As Eternal Visitor has said, battery idicators tend to lie while charging. Mobile phones do the same thing. Put them on the charge and in ten minutes they'll think the battery is full.
The best thing to do is guess the number of hours it should be on the cradle, and don't take it off until that time has elapsed.
For example, charging from empty would be 4 hours, charging from 50% would be two hours, and so on.
Power hints: Turn IR off, turn sounds off, and reduce the monitor brightness. My Zire 71's battery life is greatly extended this way.

IR stands for Infra Red, on the EM spectrum, it's just below red.
Infra Red is used in most household remote controls.
to turn off beam recieve = tap "prefs" then tap "power". you should see 3 options: auto-off after:" ",Stay on in cradle:" ", Beam Recieve:" ".

Battery percentage level, that Zire shows you is VERY not accurate (in some cases)
see my other post for detail:
