Question Unhappy with Zire 71's lack of photo integration with addressbook?

Question for Zire 71 users: Do you think it would have been better if Palm somehow incorporated the photos feature with the addressbook? Like let's say you have a friend named John....but you really don't remember what he looks like.....so you might want to put a photograph next to his name in your addressbook. Would this have been useful if Palm had this feature in Zire 71?

By the way, perhaps software like this could come out for Zire 71 in the future........the thing is, the Sony Clie's with cameras have the ability to combine your addressbook with photographs you took from its camera.

For one the straight answer is NO, I'm not unhappy that the Zire71 doesn't support photos in the address book.

Frankly I'd see that only as a gimmick, not something I would use.

I can see a 15 year old going ga-ga over a feature like this one, but I'm not 15.

    It's really simple ...

the people whom I would be comfortable enough to photograph without looking like a complete loser, are all people I know well. Therefore I don't need their photo in my address book to remember what they look like.

As far as business contacts that I may be unfamiliar with....I'd rather drink latex paint than ask a business partner "do you mind staying still while I take your photo for my address book?" ... no seriously, how much lower than that can you go without a good shovel?

The final aspect is that I dunno if there's any possibility that Palm implementing such a feature could potentially break some useful PalmOS software that relies on the published addressbook format.

Bottom line: it'd be fun for advertising purpose and fulfilling teenagers' need to have their crushes' photos in their address book. It'd be totally (or nearly so) useless for business.

I completely agree with Alessandro. I would add one more thing. I do not want to use up any more memory on my device than I have to. Keeping photos of hundreds of contacts would not be a good idea.

IMO, if you know a person and you don't remember how he looks like, he's not a FRIEND. I remember my friend's faces pretty well.

    One last thing.

Of course it happens that I forget someone's name (or the face that goes with a name, I guess)... but frankly between these two scenarios:

    1. Run into person, don't remember name

    and

    2. See person's name somewhere, don't remember face

I can't remember 2 ever happening. Meaning that I don't remember that ever being an issue. It may have happened but it's no big deal at all.

#1 has been an issue countless times, of course, and we all know how embarassing that can be, especially when the other person remembers your name and addresses you by it.

So even if Palm DID in fact implement photos in the address book.... how would that help me?

I suppose next you'd want a C.S.I. style face matching thing... so that when you run into someone who's name you don't remember, you can say something totally geeky like "wow the lighting right now is perfect for a photo, don't mind my being the biggest loser in the world, just please stay still for me a second... CLICK! Then run the feature search.... blip blip blip blip: 2 matches:

    Samantha or Mario.

    ....

    ...

    ...

You - "Ahem, may I ask a question?"

    Other person - "sure"

You - "Do you have a penis?"

Ohter person - "What?!?!?!? OF course not! Are you cuffing out of your mind!??!? Pervert!!!!" <whack><whack><whack>

You - "Samatha! How you been?!?!?!? Gimme a hug!"

    this argument is completely ridiculous

if you don't need/want a feature you may not use it.. it is the first time i'm seeing people who are against the implementation of a feature just because they don't want...

and btw, i think zire 71 is meant to be for 15-year-olds, not businesses.

I think you're missing the subtlety of the language.

    It's one thing to ask

"Would you have liked if for no extra charge and with guarantees that no third party software would stop working....."

    and it's another to ask

    "Are you unhappy with..."

Here are some examples from other aspects of life:

    1. I am NOT unhappy with my salary or the number of hours I work. - BUT I would be all in favor of a 100% raise and a 50% reduction in hours worked.

    2. I am NOT unhappy that my car can't go 200mph - BUT I would be all in favor of a free upgrade to a 500hp engine capable of achieving that goal.

I answered the question that was asked. You're probably answering a more broad "Wouldn't it be nice if X feature were implemented?"

If I had to mention features that I feel would have in fact somehow affected my happyness with the device, it'd have to be:

    1. Inclusion of Documents to Go

    2. Built-in Voice Recorder (though if I have to choose between camera and DVR I choose the camera)

As far as your statement that the Z71 is meant for 15 year olds, not businesses....

Apart from the fact that the two groups don't combined make the whole... and the fact that I disagree that 15 year olds are the target for the device... it really wouldn't matter. I still would be NOT 15, and still would NOT CARE wether the picture addressbook is included or not*.

    Alessandro

    * I wouldn't care if it's not included, I would definitelly care if it were included and broke 3rd party software.

the clarification could have been a single sentence instead of an english lesson yep, in the previous message i percieved it as "it is not necessary and shouldn't be implemented"

I wouldn't care if it's not included, I would definitelly care if it were included and broke 3rd party software.
well.. i would like this feature, and i don't care if it is palm or somebody else to implement it. i think i'm in favor of the feature, not the manufacturer.

not breaking 3rd party developers. well, you are right indeed, because this has been a policy of palmsource (or palm sg) for many years.

i think the camera in zire71 is currently not very successfully implemented because it lacks the interface to use it. palmpix for example, had an API and lots of developers could integrate it into their apps (for example, thinkDB, bugme!).

i think palm should make some kind of API rahter than a photo-address book, that way not only this one but many other cool stuff (like a photo-blogging app) could be made.
