Default Please HELP! Zire71 frozen...and not responding to taps

Please HELP! My Zire 71 has been freezing on me a couple of time. No amount of tapping would work. And then after about 2-3 minutes it would come back to normal. And now, it has just stopped responding to all stylus inputs. Occassionally, it responds to the joystick inputs.....but then after a couple of hardware button inputs it just freezes. I tried resetting it a couple of times, but now it just will not accept any stylus inputs!

I have now taken it apart after reading instructions on this forum (http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2...e=_zire71_take)

I had a screen protector on, but have taken that off.

Now, even with the screen completely stripped off from the motherboard, I continue to have the same problem: the screen just won't recognize any stylus taps!

Anyone out here...I would really appreciate your inputs. How do I solve this glitch? The screen is perfectly fine: no cracks. I even disconnected the cable connecting the screen to the motherboard and then put it back on Still no response. Only the hardware buttons work!

    Please help anyone!

    Welcome to Brighthand, Hum Log.

I am hoping that your Zire is out of warranty. Search on here for Chris Short - someone everyone recommends as providing good repair work for Palms.

    Welcome to Brighthand, Hum Log.

Sounds like you need a replacement digitizer.

    Thanks, Streaky and DT.
My Zire71 has aged beyond its warranty, so no hope there. Replacing the digitizer sounds pretty expensive.

Though the surprising thing is that once - with the Z71 completely apart - I discovered this small screw on the back of the screen & right next to the cable connector. I did a bit of tightening and loosening of that and suddenly the Z71 started responding. Overjoyed, I put it all back together to discover that the screen had frozen again! I am guessing that maybe tightening of the screws while putting the Z71 back together may be the cause of the problem. I am not too sure. Any ideas?

No ideas, but sounds like some experiments with screw tension (?) might be in order your end.

    Thanks, folks.

I have sent an email to Chris Short and am looking to see what he suggests. If the costs are too high, then I'm thinking of moving on to either the Tungsten TX or the LifeDrive. Not decided though.
