Default Cannot locate hardware device (Code 41)

I am running Win XP Home Edition and am having trouble HotSyncing with my Palm Vx. The hotsync manager says "The selected port Com 3 is not available at this time. Hot Sync will open the port when it becomes available." I looked at Com port 3 and my modem is on Com 3, so I suppose that is a conflict.

The other messages I get are: "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware, but cannot locate the hardware device.

My drop-down menu on my hot sync mgr only has 1 choice - Com 3!

This is a USB Cable, not the cradle that came with the Palm. Any suggestions?

    The PDA is version 3.5
    The Hotsync Mgr is 3.1.0

Last but not least, I tried to install an upgrade, but got the "Not digitally signed" message.

    Please... I'll try anything.

    Hello Rodee.

If you check the Windows XP Device Manager, do any other COM ports show up?

You may have to uninstall your modem driver(s), reinstall Palm Desktop, and then reinstall your modem software for things to get 'sorted out.'

    Default com ports

    Alan,

The device manager shows a yellow "!" in front of the USB to PDA cable. I right clicked that and changed the properties to Com port 2. WIll I have to shut down to make that work?

I'm not sure how to tell how many com ports I have. I know there are 2 USB ports in back and 2 in the front of this SONY PVCRX 860 model ( about 6 months old..)

Thank you Alan for trying to help me.

Palm recommends that you upgrade to the latest version of Palm Desktop. You can ignore the compatibility warning.
