Default What is a hot sync cable?

I'm getting a m500 next week, and bought some leather cases. Does a "hot sync cable" let you plug into the Palm to (a) recharge it and (b) sync with my desktop without using the cradle? What should I buy to do this, so I can avoid taking it out of its case all the time?
    Thanks,
    Larry

Well, definitely (b), and since I believe the power connects to the serial port end of the cable, I suspect (a) as well (as long as you have the charger, of course!). Since I don't have an m50X, I stand to be corrected if I'm in error!

The main reason for the cable is to avoid the need to drag your whole cradle on the road with you. The cable is a lot easier to drop into your attache case and hit the road.

The Palm branded Hotsync cable only syncs the PDA with the PC. There are 3rd party sync cables out there that will charge the m5xx PDAs from the USB port as well as sync.

No problem at all. Always happy to oblige.

Thank you both. Nismo, could you recommend a brand or source I should look at for a cable that recharges while it syncs? I see that there's a hell of a lot of cables out there, and I don't even know where to start. thanks much!

The Brando cable is popular. I have the Targus cable, it costs more, but it's available at Staples.
