    Default Changing T/W batteries

Has anyone swapped batteries in a Tungsten W? I've got a client with a T/W, and the battery won't hold a charge. I've got a second unit, actually new and in the box (we bought a spare), and I was wondering, assuming it's possible, if it wouldn't be simpler to swap the battery from the new one to the old one, and then I can send the old one in for repair. The idea is to avoid having to reload all the software on the old one. Of course if all the info is lost when you remove the battery, then there's no reason to do this.

    What do you folks think?

Am I missing something from you post?

Wouldn't it just be simpler to just hotsync the old and then re-hotsync with the new? Thus all you're old data and sw are in the new TW.

Yes, you're missing the trouble people have resyncing their T/Ws from scratch. Sometimes it doesn't work at all.

Hmmm, oh well, I guess I should just be grateful then that I never had any trouble resynching my TW.

Sure beats "operating" on a TW though.

But then again, to each his own.

Does it beat "'operating' on a TW" if the alternative is not having a usable TW because the re-syncing didn't work?

I don't know, and neither do you, if it's particularly complicated. It might be nothing more complicated then unscrewing the four screws that hold the back on, lifting out the old battery, and re-inserting the four screws. Then again taking the back off might lead to total disaster. That was the point of my asking in a newsgroup where people generously share their experience both good and bad. This way I find out if anyone has done it and if so how complicated and/or dangerous the process is.

"Don't do that because it might cause a problem" is not a motto that's going to get anyone very far.

Well, my point was not for you not to operate on your TW. All I want to point out was that it may be less riskier for you to figure out how to get the HotSync to work than to "operate" on your TW (no matter how simple or not it may be). Other "backup" software might work as well (I find Inner Backup seems to do the job pretty well). My motto is always try to find a sw solution first before pulling out my trusty screwdriver.

I was under the impression you would be open to other ideas. It seems that you're taking offense at me simply by suggesting another safer alternative. If that's the case, then my apology to you. Just trying to help a fellow TW user here.

Anyway, I'll leave this thread now seeing I'm not wanted here Hope others can help you out with your problem.

    Cool Changing the TW battery

You can go to the following site for instructions on how to dis-assemble a TW.

    http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2...ry_Code=_TungW

The battery has a metal "shield" on it that is glued on. Be careful when removing the shield as it is sharp and can cut fingers easily. It may appear that you are deforming the shield, but it is flexible and besides, no one will see it anyway. You can order replacement batteries from the same site, PDAParts.

Hope this helps. I just replaced two batteries and both units are operating. Good idea to do a sync first if at all possible.

You mentioned in earlier replies that you had problems with the syncing. Sounds like you may want to remove all the software and start over.

Thanks very much. This may seem a stupid question, but will the unit lose it's data when I remove/replace the battery?

I checked with my users and because they sync'd prior to removing the battery, they did not lose anything, info or programs.
