Default Keeps crashing every 2nd time I use Wireless

Hey everyone... I've been having a heck of a time trying to figure this out... I think I've narrowed it down to being a problem with ACT! for Palm.

When I use Wireless web or make a phone call, it works fine the first time. Then I get into my 'routine' ... checking my calendar, Documents to go, etc. The NEXT time I go to check out my email or Web browse, the TungstenW Crashes...

I've installed an update to ACT for Palm which lets me use the telephony functions now but NOW each 2nd time I use the Web or eMail I get a "Error : Serial : port in use" and I have to MANUALLY reset it in order to use Web services again. (At least it doesn't straight out and crash anymore!)

Anyone else have this happen to them?

The only way to be sure what's causing the problem is to HotSync to back up your data, rename your c:\Palm\<username>\Backup folder to BackupOld, and do a hard reset. Now HotSync to restore your PIM data and use it like that for a day or so. If you don't get any fatal errors, reinstall one app and its data from the BackupOld folder, then use it for a day or so. Continue to restore one app at a time until you either identify the problem app or have a trouble-free Palm.

Thanks! I should have been a little mode explicit in my testing methodology, but I did perform the install one app... see how it runs, etc. When I installed ACT! for Palm the rerrors cropped up. I deleted the app from the handhels and the problem went away, then came back after re-installing.

I posted a more detailed saga on the ACT! community site since they are the ones more likely to know what the problem is. This is what I posted:

I have been having a very frustrating problem on my Tungsten-W which I've found is caused by ACT! For Palm.

I have been having a very frustrating problem on my Tungsten-W which I've found is caused by ACT! For Palm.
I have had to reinstall all my apps after battery ran completely down so I took the opportunity to install each app one at a time to figure this out.

THE PROBLEM: Let's say I turn on my Palm and edit a record, check my email, and go back to my daily business. If I later try to check the Web or email a second time, it will cause a "Fatal Error" which requires a hard reset.

I do the reset and all is great. I check my email again, go back to ACT!, Doc To Go, AvantGo, etc. and then AGAIN try to connect a second time to the internet, CRASH.

I've installed the Telephony patch and now the problem is different... every second time I try to access the Web I get a "Serial Port is Busy" error. (At least it does not CRASH but I still have to do a hard reset to fix the problem)

Also, as great as telephony in ACT for the Palm is, when I hit the phone icon and dial the number, it dials the number alright, but the phone does not know about it... When I go to the phone app to hang up or press buttons (i.e. have to type a password) the phone app does not know it has dialed.... I can't press number buttons on my call and in order to hang up, I have to hold the phone button and power it off! <wacky!>

I have two Tungstens, BTW: one for me and one for my wife, so I know this is not my hardware. i even un-installed ACT on the Palm device and all went abck to normal... I was able to go from Web to Address book, Web to Doc-To-Go, Web to DateBook, all without a crash once I un-installed.

Anyone else running ACT For Palm on a TungstenW (or another wireless device) and getting this?

What Telephony patch? I have not seen any patches from Palm for the T|W yet. Palm has posted 2 software downloads for the T|W to date:

    1. BT drivers for the Palm BT SD card
    2. Versamail patch for attachments.

    Did I miss something?

You didn't miss anything... the telephony patch was from ACT!... it allows ACT! for Palm users to dial a number from the ACT! address book... Problem is, it doesn't let the Palm phone know, so I have to power the phone off to hang up! :-)

    Sorry for the confusion.

    Still searching...
