GPRS Settings
Has anyone figured out how to configure the GPRS side of the Palm Tungsten W for providers other than AT&T and Rogers AT&T in Canada? Palm tech support has a contract with AT&T that doesn't permit them to help. Other provider tech support people have all the usual GPRS settings but something is missing. They don't work for me.
I have an unlocked TW. In fact Rogers AT&T sells them all unlocked along with a Rogers data card. Once you insert the Rogers Data card, the phone is effectively locked, since it generates a long, loud signal during calls on a non-Rogers SIM card. Very cute.
The usual stuff, username, PW, APN, are not a enough. An error message appears saying that the GPRS settings are incorrect.
So who knows how to configure this thing for other providers. There's obviously a way.

Ennis, Please identify which network you want settings for.
If the Rogers TW is unlocked, it should work for voice on any network. If you change locations, do you still get the interference? I'm using an unlocked TW with no problems.Once you insert the Rogers Data card, the phone is effectively locked, since it generates a long, loud signal during calls on a non-Rogers SIM card. My problem isn't voice. My problem is making a GPRS connection and enabling email and the browser. I have an unlocked Rogers AT&T TW and I want to use my Fido account. I know the Fido settings. When I put them in I get an error message telling me that the GPRS settings are incorrect. Something is missing in my setup. I can't get help from Palm, and Fido doesn't know.Originally posted by Abbey

Well... I'm confused.
What is Fido?
I thought you had an unlocked device and you were inserting another network carrier's SIM (Microcell, TMobile, Vodafone) and you wanted the GPRS settings for that carrier. I've never heard of Fido.

I have an unlocked device. I am inserting another network carrier's SIM card - Microcell, which is Fido. So if you know about Microcell, which you seem to, you have to know about Fido. Fido is a national carrier in Canada owned by Microcell, a Canadian telecom.Originally posted by Abbey

I know Fido's GPRS settings. What I've been saying here is that the TW will not accept them.

I only knew about Microcell and Rogers. I have taken business trips to Canada and have seen both when I did network searches. My phone reported Microcell rather than Fido. Fido? What's with that name? OK, now that we've established that I am clueless, let's dive into this a bit further...Originally posted by Ennis

I too have an unlocked device (from Expansys). I had a pre-existing account with Voicestream, whose name changed to T-Mobile a while back. I configured my TW with T-Mobile's GPRS settings and everything works just fine for me.
I'm assuming you did the following:
1. New Prefs->Connection type with "Connect to" set to GPRS and "Via" set to Mobile. Enter Fido's APN in Prefs->Connection->Details
2. New Prefs->Network->Service and enter username/password for Fido Account (if needed)
3. Prefs->Network->Connection set to New Connection created in step 1.
4. Tap Connect
What error are you seeing after you Tap the Connect button? Also, are you sure your FIDO SIM is activated for GPRS? Sorry for all the questions.

Who cares about the name? Go to www.fido.ca and you'll understand the name. It's as common here as Verizon or Cingular is to you.
The Fido SIM has been doing GPRS for two years. I'll try again, but I don't think it will work. If it does I'll be delighted because Fido allows CSD connections, meaning you only pay for airtime and nothing else.

Abbey, you're a genius. It works. The step I was leaving out was putting the APN into "Details" under "Connection". Nobody at Palm support knew that.
Now, because Fido allows CSD connections, I'm dialing straight into my ISP, avoiding GPRS charges, and paying only for airtime.
