I found a solution I like much better. I set up an automatic forward for the POP account I used with my W. It automatically sends an SMS to my W every time I get an email. I immediately know I got a message and a little bit of the message, and I don't use any data time to find out. If I want to read all of it, I can go download it with VersaMail.

If you have AT&T voice then all you need to do is use 1234567890@mobile.att.net (insert your phone number for the numbers there) as a forwarding address for the message. Make sure you keep the full message somewhere else, though, because you can only get 110 or so characters in SMS. AT&T seems to truncate longer emails instead of breaking them up, which is good if you want to just get a single notification for each one.

Great!!! Hope this feature is supported by our local mobile operator here in the Philippines.
