    Default JVM for Tungsten W

I know this is a bit of a stretch, but does anyone know where to find the JVM that was briefly released for the Tungsten W? I know it wasn't supported for very long. I have seen the later version, but it requires OS 5. I was hoping to try installing Opera Mini 3 and see if it would run.

Failing this, are there any working browsers for the Tungsten W in 2011? I still like the PDA, so it isn't a dealbreaker but I have GPRS and browsing news headlines would be nice. Thanks in advance for replies.

Search for BH member Jigwashere and look in his 'signature' lines, where he includes lots of useful links. One is for installing JVM plus the necessary other files.

Thanks Varjak, I appreciate that. I took a look and that version is the Palm OS 5 version of the J9 JVM, my Tungsten is bit too antique. There was an earlier version that was actually compatible with Palm OS 4.1 that was included with WSDD 5.6 at the latest I think, and some of the WebSphere Micro Environment Toolkits through palm. Some of the only info of this I can find on the net is:
    ---
WebSphere Micro Environment Toolkit for Palm OS
For detailed information on this toolkit and the contained runtime, please download the MIDP 2.0 Porting Guide.

Note: This version of the toolkit replaces all previous versions. To execute in the MIDP 2.0 and MIDP 1.0 runtimes released on March 31, 2004, MIDlets should be packaged with this versions of the toolkit.

Version: General Release (ARM and 68k/PACE)
    Date Released: March 31, 2004

    Size: 7.5mb
Description: Runtime, Packaging, and Debugging Tools for Java 2 Micro Edition support on palmOne devices.

    MIDP 2.0 (ARM) Device Support: Treo 600, Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten T2, Tungsten E, Zire 71

    MIDP 1.0 (68k) Device Support: Tungsten W

    J2ME Standard Support: Connected Limited Device Configuration 1.0 & 1.1, Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 & 2.0
    ---

Any leads on this would be appreciated, this doesn't seem to be widely available. Thanks

Sorry, I'm not up on all the various versions of Palm OS. I should have realized that the W is pretty far back in the evolutionary tree.

What do you want it for? If it's for another browser like Opera, it may not be worth your time. People have trouble getting Opera to work on TX's.

No problem. It's been a rugged PDA, still serving me well. It doesn't impress anybody, but that's ok.

That is precisely what I was intending to try. The standard web browser is the old Web Pro that doesn't work without the long gone server. I can get a data connection for a low fee so I was hoping to put in a working browser. Nothing fancy, just want to get some news headlines on the way to work, maybe mail. I was advised that Opera mini 3 works on Palms as old as the V & Vx, so I'll give it a go if I can find the runtime. It would be a bonus if the JVM also allowed for adding some Java games, but I don't know enough about the portability of that stuff. It might be hard to find compatible games that old, if they exist.

I found a package called wme4palm, which include the following:

    j9_vm_bundle.prc
    Java Demo.prc
    midp21.prc

I can confirm that the demo runs on my TW, and that this is an IBM runtime. The palm version numbers read out as:

    J9 MIDP Bundle v2.1.005
    J9 VM Bundle v2.1
    Java Demo v1.0

The demo has a summary that reads the JVM as CLDC-1.02 / MIDP-1.0

Out of curiousity I tried Opera's Mini 3 Basic prc, but I got the message that I need to install IBM's JVM - and it is already there. I'm not sure how to get this to run, Opera lists this as old Palm MIDP 1.0 compatible but it won't run.

I was unable to post the links in my last post because I was still under 5 posts.

Opera Mini on Palm OS 3.5 and 4 | Wap Review

The download I found does not have a j9pref.prc file, nor does it have the jxe2prc.exe utility so I can't try this method out. At any rate, if anyone needs the JVM the link was found here:

Java for your Tungsten - mobiload

If anyone knows how to install Opera Mini for Palm OS 4, please bump the thread.

Another update. I found two sets of files on a Russian PDA forum. I could not read the majority of the text, but there were references to Palm OS 4 and Opera mini.

    ibm.zip : includes j9_vm_bundle.prc, j9pref.prc, midp21.prc, mini_int.prc, mini_rus.prc

Converter.zip : includes an assortment of dll files, and utilities including jxe2prc.exe

Version numbers read out from Palm OS:

    J9 Java Options: V2.1
    J9 MIDP Bundle V2.1.008
    J9 VM Bundle V2.1

What's interesting is that the Java demo from the previously posted JVM does not run with this version. The Opera mini browsers are Russian and International versions of what appears to be Opera Mini 1, probably converted in the manner described on Wap Review, see previous post for link. Converter.zip might be taken from WSDD 5.6? Not sure, and I haven't tried anything with it yet. I can confirm the JVM works in a TW, the Opera Mini international version starts up (takes quite a few seconds) but chokes when trying to resolve my network connection, requiring a hard reset.

I'd post a link to the other forum, but navigation and downloading was a difficult puzzle for those of us in english, so it made more sense to upload the files to storage and provide a new easy link:

MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

    password: brighthand

Use at your own risk, I had to hard reset due to lockup every time I ran it. Since it froze up after attempting to start the network, I'm not sure what component is to blame.
