Help: hardware problem - hotsync does not work
Hello,
I have the following problem with a Tungsten T: the hotsync doesn't work anymore, neither pressing the hotsync button on the cradle, nor the on screen button in Hotsync application (which gives a timeout).
But, CardExport works flawlessly! I can transfer files without problems.
I've tried differenct cables and a cradle, but the results are the same... Tried hard reset also, it didn't help.
Anyone seen something like this?
Any help appreciated!

By what you are describing it sounds more to me a Palm Desktop problem and less hardware problem...
If cable works ok (CardExport), Hotsync itself works too (You can activate it on palm, can't you) only the windows part seems to be ignoring the hotsync call.. then problem is in windows/palm desktop.

First, thanks for replying!
But i think i was a little confusing: unfortunately starting the Hotsync app on the palm itself doesn't work either
Also, I tried not just the palm desktop, but pilot install also: nothing happens when i press Hotsync on the Palm...
But its very strange that CardExport works flawlessly... :-o
Any ideas? :-o

What OS are you running on your computer? Have you installed any new hardware or software or security patches since your last succcessful sync? Is the Hotsync Icon in your system tray? What settings are selected in Hotsync Manager? What is the full text of the timeout message?

check your setup and
try again.
This must be a hardware problem, cable/connector problem inside the Tungsten... but very strange that Cardexport works...

That's exactly what makes it strange.
USB doesn't have 32 wire pinout. The only thing there is is power and data. So if card export works fine that means that the usb connection in itself is also working fine and there are no hardware problems.
The only hardware "hotsync" part what is there is the "hotsync interrupt" signal... a pin on the connector which, if shorted to another pin, gives Palm a signal that it should hotsync now. That's how the hotsync hardware button is implemented on the cradle and on the cables.
As for the rest.. reasons can be many. Wrong palm configuration, usb failure on the computer, buggy palm desktop, conflicting drivers, palm hotsync library corruption and many others.
I would advise to take systematic approach to find the cause of the error.

The first place I would look is at Hotsync Manager's setup. This message frequently seems to occur when Windows takes Com1 for its own purposes so try Com3. There are a number of threads here with similar problems, a search on com1 will find them for you.

Switching to Com 3
How do I switch to Com 3? My computer sometimes tells me that com 1 is already being used by my computer. Maybe switching to com 3 would really fix some of my problems!! I'd surely like to try it!

Hi I occasionally have the same problem with my T5. What I have to do to get my syncing back is to run a bit of software downloaded from Palmone called usbregclean .
I then restart my computer, with my palm plugged in and ON. When I then press the hotsync button windows asks for drivers etc. In the palmone folder (in program files) there is (for my T5) a folder called USB_Driver. Load the driver from here. This fixes my issues with hotsyncing.
On average I have to do this about once a week. No idea what causes it, I actually bought a bluetooth adapter to get around the problem.
Hope this helps,
Bruce

Another Reason...
...Palm _crews us!
bruceathome,
This doesn't seem right to me. Why should we have to download ANYTHING (other than the Palm software) to get these gadgets to work smoothly?
This doesn't seem right to me! I should be able to expect a machine that i paid $350 for to work smoothly with the software that came with it WITHOUT any problems!! This is NOT new technology. It's been around for several years and NO company should release hardware that doesn't function smoothly without tweeking!
