Default Help running M with T

I suspect that I might be going about this all wrong, but I'm trying to run a M515 & a Tungsten T with the same info. I realize that they use a different os & many programs are incompatable.
What I did was sync'ed the T in the M's cradle & deleted all the apps that would not run. So far so good, but now I need to know how to rename the T so that it has it's own username. If I can do that, I would then use SyncUs 3.0 to keep them coordinated. Or is there a better way?

You could rename the user in the Palm desktop, hard reset the PDA, hot sync again, choosing the new user.

I use this technique with a spare T1 now and again to build custom .dba files to be imported into other folks PDAs.

Once you have 2 (or more) users on your Palm Desktop, the PDAs themselves will figure it out (since they know who they are), but you might need to be careful when installing new software to choose the correct user.

But if I do a hard reset, won't I loose all the info & apps that I want to get into the desktop as a new user?

    Hard reset
    Rename user in Desktop
Hotsync PDA that was hard reset
    Rename user back in Desktop

You now have two palms with two users.

That made sense, but when I tried that, it erased all the data in the desktop. Should I have changed the hotsync to "handheld overwrites desktop"? I thought it would restore the files like every other time I had to do a hard reset. Still got all the data on the M515, but I don't want to mess up now. Sorry to be a pain.

Backup your PC directory now so you do not loose everything.

Anyone else want to jump in and assist? feel free to do so.

Now, when you tried to hotsync the PDA that had just been hard reset, it should have asked you what user you wanted or if you wanted to create a new user. Did you get that?

Also, there are differences between a T* and an M5**. You have the M5** with the data still, correct?

Alternately, you could beam the data from one PDA to the other via the IR link.

I have used special categories (e.g.: HERS and HIS) to have the unique data and beam replacing at the category level from one to the other in the past.

That a good idea, If I can't figure out what went wrong with your 1st suggestion, I'll do that. Meanwhile I made a couple of backups of the data that I have. I'll try something tonite after work.

    Got It!
Your method was fine, the problem was in the WAY I was renaming the user. Instead of retyping a name, I just added a T on the end of the existing name (for Tungsten) & clicked OK. By doing that, it created a new user instead of renaming the current user. Thus, the data dissappeared BEFORE the hotsync - without me realizing this was happening. I found this by accident; when I renamed it back to the original name, all my data reappeared. It took me a while to realize what was happening, but if I retyped the whole name with the "T", then it worked.
Once again one small shortcut cost me a mile.
Thanks for all your help, sorry to put you thru this!
