Question Mac Users Palm Desktop vs. Jaguar Mac OS X

Before I make the leap and risk alot of missing data and headaches. Can we get some input from current Jaguar users? I would like to thank all contributors ahead of time for their input and time.

How well does it sync? Data? Backups? 3rd party apps especially: Pocket Quicken, Docs to Go,WordSmith, and Acrobat?

    Are there any issues?
    Stability?

Is Jaguar missing anything that Palm Desktop has or the reverse?

    What do you like?
    What don't you like?

I upgraded to Jaguar a few weeks and for the most part, Palm Desktop is the same as in the Classic mode.

As stated in the other Mac-related post, I had to reinstall Desktop when moving over (though it was a new Mac as well) and after I messed around with iSync preferences and gummed up the works (don't do that).

The iSync is nice and copies stuff over just find so you can use on iCal. I find I do that about once a week so I can update my online iCal.

Jaguar, 10.2.4, is faster than Classic and you can be syncing in the background and call up other apps or files, which is nice.

It's pretty straightforward. I wouldn't think you'd have any problems with it in upgrading other than having to download a conduit or two (which I didn't do on a custom install hence the need to re-install).

Are you asking about using iSync in place of Palm Desktop? Or just how everything works under Jaguar?

I have been using Jaguar for quite a while now, Palm Desktop works just fine, as well as Documents to Go 5, AcroDesktop, and Pocket Quicken. Recently I have switched over to Entourage and it seems to work fine with both the MS conduit and Queuesync. Although I don't seem to have a way to sync categories for the calendar within Entourage.

I used iSync when it was in beta, and it also worked well, although with iCal once again there is no category sync'ing. All of your Palm datebook appointments end up in a single iCal category. Some have complained about slow syncing with iCal, I don't personally remember this being an issue under the beta. Queuesync also has a conduit for Apple's Mail.app so that you can sync your email.

One thing to be wary about, is to pick one way to do your information storage (i.e. Palm Desktop, Entourage, OR iSync) and do all the basic stuff that way. If you try getting multiple PIM's storing different data you will probably end up pulling out some hair. I personally went from one system to the next to find out 1) what would work best for me, and 2) what would be most kosher with the business I work with. Turns out that the two were mutually exclusive

I use Tungsten T with my iMac..no real probs with syncing (i don't like iCal, i use Palm's DT).
The only real problem for Mac users is those darn .exe files. Not every one of the 3rd party apps you might want to install provide a Mac (.sit) version. In that case you'll need access to a PC or Virtual PC.

I am sorry that I was not clear. Yes I am thinking of just using isync. It would be nice to have all in one place. You know keep it simple.

    So what do you prefer?
    Palm Desktop / isync Jaguar/ Entarage ?

I HATE iSync! It totally screwed up my TT's address book! And it was a nightmare to get ALL of iSync off my computer. I have NEVER siad anything NEGATIVE about an Apple product, EVER.

I personally prefered just using Palm Desktop for my work. However, I have gone the Entourage way to be more in line with the business.

I really wanted to use iSync, but it just wasn't developed enough yet, and Apple's address book wouldn't talk with Eudora, and vice-versa.

I have been a happy Tungsten owner for a whoppin' 3 weeks now, and a very experienced Jaguar user. Things are fine with my T, but some problems I had initially I believe were caused by having a few too many dubious freeware apps loaded (dubious in their compatibility with OS5)

I am using Sheet to Go, but had too much wierdness with Word to Go (formatting was mysteriously 'lost') Plus, it doesn't want to work with TextPlus.

For me, the secret has been to run lean and mean. the only stuff I have running that didn't come with the tungsten are: DateBk5, Backup Buddy, and TextPlus, Mobile DB and powerOne personal (the last two on the Essentials CD).

I like everything about the T, and dislike nothing, except that I wish Palm had designed a more secure locking system for use with protective cases, and I wish that I could write memos as long as I have RAM (9 MB free as of this writing.)

Since I pared my software complement, all's well in the Kingdom, and the T seems to sport bombproof stability.

I too also prefer Palm's Desktop. I tried using iSync as an experiment, just to try it. Argh!
The Palm Desktop works GREAT for me in 10.2.4

iMac, jaguar user here. Save yourself some headaches..stick with Palm Desktop..skip iSync until Apple makes it a more robust program.
