Default Switching to Vista/Palm Desktop 6.xx

Possibly I may soon be buying a computer loaded with Vista home premium. I will still be using my T3, but I'm assuming that I will be obliged to upgrade to the latest version of Palm desktop to work with Vista, yes? Or will v. 4.14 work for the most part? I remember when Vista was first released one of the big issues was incompatibility with the quick install tool. I seriously do not think that I will ever be loading apps into the T3 again, so that's not a big deal. I would like to hear any "heads up" on Palm & Vista. My main crucial app, Smartlist To Go, was just recently upgraded for Vista compatibility--and I have Docs To Go v. 10.0, as well.

Edit: since posting, I see there's been even some recent threads somewhat similar to this question. mentioning desktop v. 4.14e. I'd still like someone who's had some real life experience to chime in, though

I have no experience with Vista. But just from my reading here in BH-land, I think your best bet is to use PD v6.x to work correctly with Vista. I seem to recall that someone had developed a solution for the Quick Install issue, but don't recall what it is.

If you're able to use v4.1.4 of PD, I recommend installing the "non-e" version first. That one has the additional applets and conduits that work with the T3. The "e" version can be overlayed if you need the updated Outlook conduits. This is all assuming, of course, that v4.1.4 will actually work with Vista - Don't rely on my advice in that regard.

Something else you might want to check into is CES Dewar's (of DateBook 5/6 fame) latest project: Pimlical. It's been released in "preview" form, but I expect significant and rapid fine tuning.

I'm not sure I've helped much, but hopefully some others will come along with firsthand experience to guide you more accurately.

Best of luck with the migration!

I should only have to LET the technology work for me. If I have to MAKE the technology work for me, it's not a tool - It's a boat anchor. And I've got better things to do than manage boat anchors, especially if I don't have a boat.

My daughter was successful synching my old T3 with Vista Home Basic. This is a 32 bit version of Vista, I've heard there may be issues with 64 bit systems. She had to install Desktop 6.3 as 4.1.4 and 4.1.4e caused errors and would not install.

wjbertrand, your approach was correct on all counts.
Experience is what you get when you thought you were getting something else.

Yeah, we had to learn all of this the hard way with her 250 miles away as school! Particularly tough at my end since all of my computers are running XP, not Vista.

Well, I'm running Vista Bussiness, and had an absoultely horrible time trying to Hotsync a TE2 and a T5 with Palm Desktop 6.3.

Instead I installed 4.14e and it works without a hitch, although I have to make sure Vista doesn't block the Hotsync Manager at startup every time I switch off my PC.
