TE2, a downgrade story
Hi folks.
Recently been forced into using my other halfs TE2 due to unforseen circumstances.
Apart from the obvious problems of smaller screen, slower processor, no built in WiFi, less RAM and horrible finger print mess on the unit itself, it is a great little Palm.
The only thing I really do not understand, is the dbCache stats.
Resco explorer reports over 9215000 available, with never any more than 3646000 free, no matter how many flushes I perform.
pToolSet reports 9436912 available, of which there is 3732424 free.
Either way, there is a lot of stuff occupying the cache, and no way to free up any more. Sometimes Blazer refuses to start because of low memory, and on odd occasions crashes on startup with a message about linker stubb app not available, or some such thing.
I searched for a custom ROM with the thought in mind that Treo users managed to increase dbCache by getting rid of stuff never needed in ROM
but this does not appear to be an option for TE2 users.
In short, life is made more difficult by the downgrade and if anyone else ever considers doing so, I would be inclined to advise against it unless absolutely neccessary, because the TX is a really brilliant PDA, and the TE2 can never stack up to it in any way.
I like the TE2 in spite of this, and have got used to its quirky ways. Perhaps my ways are quirky, and I am sure Mrs b. will testify to that, but losing all the abilities of my TX has hurt me somewhat, and until I can replace it or buy a new shiny Centro, or maybe a Dark Side WM6 500v, who knows!!!
All the best to my friends here

Re: TE2, a downgrade story
I have also 'downgraded' from a T5 to an E2, but this time I chose to.
I found the T5's battery life to be much lower than I would prefer (may be the TX's is better). Besides, the larger screen, though great at viewing photos or watching videos on, was a hindrance when it comes to quick text editing. Toggling the DIA every so often was not so comfortable to me. On-screen Graffiti was never accurate.
The E2 is slower but it's more practical as text-based PDA. That's what I think.
Now I use the T5 for photos/videos/music only, while the E2 is my main device for everything else.My Artwork (+)

Re: TE2, a downgrade story
The E2 was one of the first NVFS PDAs, and the first without a flashable ROM. My hunch is that the OS was based on a pretty similar NVFS Build as the T5 and can't be updated, thus the odd cache. It does have its quirks but is a handy text-based PDA like Haisook says.
Mine loiters on standby, occasionally pitching in to do beta testing, just in case something happens to my TX. I dunno about going back to <1GB card roulette though.
Sorry to hear about your TX Andy.
Hope Mrs. Bluefish is doing well without her E2.

Re: TE2, a downgrade story
Bickering good, Bluefish, it's arguing that's bad. Me and t'other bicker all the time, like a safety valve, but argue very rarely. And anyway, the most valuable thing in my Palm is the PIM data itself - irrespective of all the nice bells and whistles. I switched to a TX recently due to my T5 going belly-up, although I could have gone the other way.
