Question Hot Sync Failure w/new cable on two computers

My Treo 650 stopped syncing with the cable on both my laptop and my desktop. I have changed the cable (brand new) and that didn't help. I have received a replacement Treo with the upgraded software and that didn't help. I did the hotsync.exe file that was suggested on another thread and that didn't tell me anything. I can sync with Bluetooth (fortunately). When I try to sync with the cable, it makes a sound lwhen I connect the cable, and then three fast short bongs when I initiate the hot sync. It then shows the "connecting with the desktop using Cradle/Cable" screen but nothing happens. Hot sync does not open on my desktop. Then I get, "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again." I've reinstalled the software many times. Any help please. I don't think I had installed any programs prior to this failure but I took my most recent installation out just in case. I did add DSL to my desktop but not to my laptop. Without the Bluetooth I'd be really frustrated but I want the speed of the cable back.

When you are installing the Palm Software, have you turned OFF all running applications, especially any antivirus and Windows firewall? Do you have Administrator priveleges in Windows? Have you checked the Hotsync Manager configuration (in your system tray)? If you are using Dell computers, try COM3 as COM1 is reserved by Dell.

This may be obvious but, make sure HotSync Manager is running on the PC. I once forgot to run it.
