Default Why didn't anyone tell me about the Palm Treo 700p?

Man, why didn't anyone tell me about this phone. I just spent 800 buck Cdn last week for a 650 only to find that it's now out of date? AAAAAArrrgh! It's not even listed on Palm One's website. I would have happily waited a few weeks for it.

any way you can return it?

the 700p has been out for over a week and has been on palm's front page of their web site well over two weeks now, possibly even since the first week of may. it's not such a big deal unless you have a problem with memory or with data network speed. the 700p offers more memory and evdo data access. i plan to upgrade, but i'm not sure how soon. 800 bucks cdn sounds a little high, so perhaps you should return it if only to get a better deal on the 650.

Thanks for your reply. My browser defaults to Palm's Canada home page and the 700 isn't on that page so that is how I must have missed it. The 800 bucks doesn'e inclued a $250 mail-in rebate so I'll only end up paying $550 in the end.

Too late to return it though. I'll just have to pine for a year or so until I can justify an upgrade.

Do you realize that the 700p is available, at the moment, in a CDMA version only? It may not be compatible with your phone carrier. I don't expect to see a GSM version for 3-6 months.

Good point stevel. Plus we all realize the tech we buy becomes obsulete almost as soon as we buy it. In your case you just realized it all too quick

Still the Treo 650 is a pretty great device!!! Well worth buying!

Thanks all. My carrier is GSM anyway so it seems the Treo 700 won't work yet anyway. I do like the 650, but the specs on the 700 are impressive. Oh well, dare to dream

In my opinion, the only thing about the 700p that's a significant improvement over the 650 is the available memory, and that isn't a problem for me. Yes, CDMA users get EV-DO, which is nice. It will be interesting to see what GSM users get. Still no Wi-Fi, which puzzles me no end. Yeah, the camera is better. Maybe that matters to some, it doesn't to me.

Otherwise it's not enough better than the 650 to feel bad about a 650 purchase.

The other good thing about buying a 650 now, as opposed to a 700p is that the 650 is a mature product. Most carriers have put out at least one, if not two ROm updates for their 650's. Also, the third party software companies should have updated their products to work smoothly on a 650. When the 700p comes out, I suspect that there will be a number of products that will be unstable until they are update for the new device.

Just my 2 cents, based on past experiences with Palm products...

I went from a TX to a 650. No issues. No instability. I suspect going from any NVFS unit to a 700p would be the same. No issues whatsoever. I have one ROM update preinstalled (Verizon 1.03), but didn't bother with the Verizon 1.04 update. As a CDMA user, I definitely want the faster EVDO speed and I really need the extra memory after going from 128 meg on the TX to a mere 32 meg on the Treo 650. I must wait a while because I want the version without a camera. Once that comes out, I will probably upgrade to the 700p.

There are some other 700p nice-to-haves as well: a voice recorder program, an updated version of blazer, and docs 2 go 8.0 comes on internal ROM (not installed from cd) and reads native pdf's. I think they even throw in a copy of bejeweled.

It's the increased memory that I really like as well. I dumped the LifeDrive after the 6th time I had to have Palm replace it. Then I bought a TX which has given me no problems. I was just in Egypt during the recent bombings and realized that I needed better mobile email access - enter the Treo.

Great product but too shy on memory. I don't care about the camera. I don't use it anyway.
