Soft Reset after changing categories
I use the category colors in the calender pretty heavily, or at least I used to on my old palms. Now when I try to do this on my cingular 650, it soft resets every tim I try to change one of the colors under edit categories.

I too have had this. It happened when I first hotsynched my own meeting/event categories. Then when I went to change color - reset.
Question: Are you using your own predefined categories when this happens or the built in categories?
If you are using your own when it happens, here is what you can do (as I still wanted to use my own predefined categories):
1. Hard Reset. (you lose your customized categories on the Calendar)
2. Before a Synch, I FIRST enter in my custom categories on the Treo Calendar
3. Then, I set my conduits so that the Desktop overwrites the Handheld for Calendar.
4. Hotsynch.
5. Your pre-entered custom categories are unaffected by the Hotsynch, and then you can change their colors now.
Lemme know if that helps.Cingular Treo 650 Unlocked, SW 1.17-CNG, FW 1.51

Really, you just need to pre-enter your custom categories before your first hotsynch.
The treo does fine with predefined/pre-entered event categories, only when entered before hotsynching with Outlook.

If you want, try just deleting all the event categories.
Then go to step 2.Cingular Treo 650 Unlocked, SW 1.17-CNG, FW 1.51
