Default Is the Treo 600 a good unit?

I was looking around pdaparts.com when I noticed they sold refurbished Palm Handhelds. I then noticed they had the treo 600. What I would like to know is this: is it worth the buying? I won't be using the internet on it, as I have a GSM prepaid plan, but I would like my two devices combined(Nokia 6030 and E2).

Are there any really big bugs in this specific Treo?

I would not recommend the Treo 600. It is a pre-nvfs unit which means a dead battery means no data. You might not even be able to even swap in a new battery without losing everything and needing to do a restore.

I would say the Treo 650 is about the oldest Palm OS smartphone worthy of consideration. Other 600 demerits include screen resolution, memory footprint, etc, etc, etc. The 650 is a better unit if you never use the 'net because while it has nvfs memory (like the z22), it uses slower dialup-class network connectivity. You already have a z22 which means you are using nvfs compatible 3rd party apps. Going backward with newer apps will probably be as problematic as trying to bring pre nvfs applications forward to an nvfs device.

These issues aren't bugs but rather design shortcomings of such an old device.

Let's not forget the 600 had a low resolution screen.

Also, the treo 600 had no bluetooth. And IIRC the battery was non-replaceable.

How much would a t-mobile compatable 650 cost? As I recall, r0k, you had one for sale. PM me, and we can discuss.

Besides what has already been said, the Treo 600 also had a reputation for a high rate of failure, much higher than other Palm devices before or since. Not a device I'd recommend.

What you describe is an unlocked GSM Treo 650. I don't think r0k's unit will help you, it's a Verizon model.

Sorry, mine won't do you any good. It's for Verizon. I don't think Verizon forces you into a contract if you bring your own phone so if you're interested in mine let me know. I've been too busy to hard reset it. It's sitting in my desk drawer alongside my dusty and inactive TX.

From a quick ebay scan, it looks like unlocked 650's go for roughly 100, about twice what the vzw ones I saw were going for.

Is there any chance you could upgrade to post-paid and get a centro for cheap/free with a contract?

I use Tmobile, not At&t. The newest Palm device they used to have was the 650.

T-Mobile never had the 650 stateside, 600 was the only version they ever had. There were so many problems with the 600, that T-mobile has never carried another palm device. The 600 was my first smart phone, and one of the worst phones I have ever owned. I used my 600 for about 6 months, after my last reset (which all my contacts, e-mails and everything was erased because I didn't charge the unit) plus the crappy signal. I was done with the 600. I wanted to get the 650, but they never had it on T-mobile USA, they may have carried it internationally but not stateside.

If you are looking for a GSM verison of a Treo, I highly suggest the 680. That phone is a good phone
