Default treo 270 battery problem after upgrade

i just updated my treo 270's OS with the one from palm, the GPRS upgrade. however, right after i install the update, its battery suddenly drains so easily. before the upgrade, the battery lasts for a whole day (i send lots of sms everyday) then after the upgrade, the battery lasts for only 5 hours standby (no exaggeration!). i'd charge the treo when i get home early evening and i disconnect it from the charger before i sleep. when i wake up in the morning the treo won't turn on because it ran out of charge!

my theory is that this is caused by the gprs connection. but the thing is, i always have it disconnected. i only use the phone function. any clues on this? or can i at least revert to the older version of the OS (the non-gprs version)?

Even when not transmitting any data, GPRS does make connection to the cell towers. I can also see this on my device (680). When a little triangle is being shown next to the signal indicator, I know it is within GPRS range though I never use it either.

I just spend some time searching Palm Support pages, I even downloaded the upgrade to see what it is exactly.
I am not 100% sure if this thing can be removed from your device since I do not know if 270 is flashed during this upgrade or not. If you have some sort of backup strategy, you could try a hard reset and act as if you upgrade (will only restore your PIMs, not applications) but I admit it is a pretty radical procedure.
Another thing you can try is to warm reset, then use a tool like FileZ to locate the GPRS file, remove it, then soft reset again.

However, if this upgrade is buried in Flash, it becomes a problem ... Is there no preference setting where you disable GPRS ?

thank you for your reply. lots of nice people out here.

i think the upgrade did reflash the rom. the gprs connection setting is currently disabled, and the whole thing still happens. there's no prefs setting for completely taking off gprs.

it may be possible that the battery problem is not because of the gprs upgrade (since no one else seems to have encountered it), but i can't find any other possible cause for the abrupt change in battery life.

any other suggestions about the probable cause for my battery problem would be really appreciated..

    Already tried in-cradle reset ?

Connect to charger, soft reset, leave charging for some hours. This recalibrates the internal battery charging circuitry, it can be needed from time to time.

    Glad your issue is resolved
Care to share exactly which preference it was ? Maybe some others might benefit ...

Thumbs up Re: treo 270 battery problem after upgrade

alright. in prefs, under the network option, i tapped on the menu. i found the preferences under the option menu which will show a dialog box asking whether the treo will automatically connect to the data network whenever the wireless modeis on.
