Why doesnt the cover of the Compactflash card close fully when the card is inserted
Is this the case with all Audiovox maestros. is this a defect in only my piece. looks pretty bad, being open like that.

Yes this is a common problem with Vox's - tolerances for door and slot were too tightly toleranced w/ CF cards. Possible solutions have included filing down the CF card or in my case, exchanging my Vox w/ another one since my door was pretty significantly ajar.

It really depends on the specific brand/type of CF card you are using. When I had a 128 MB CF card, the cover closed completely and "locked" into place. Recently, I bought a 256 MB CF card, and was very annoyed to find that the CF cover would not close completely on my Vox. There was a slight gap, as you described.
I solved this problem by using a nail file to "sand" down the top of the CF card. After filing the top edge down, my CF cover now closes all the way. Of course, you have to be careful when filing down the CF card and make sure you don't go too far. However, the plastic seems to be very thick at the top of CF cards, and there should not be any problems in filing it down. I have not had any problems with my card after doing this. You should also be careful not to destroy the "lip" at the top of the card used to grip and remove the card.
I agree that this is an annoying problem, but I think most cards fit perfectly without any problems. The larger capacity CF cards (256 MB +) appear to cause problems in some cases.

I have a 256 Meg Storage card in my Maestro (Kingston CF) and the door shuts fine. I suspect the problem here is that some CF cards are non-standard in size and shape. I don't view it as an audiovox issue.

I agree, Darth. I do not think this is Audiovox's fault, either. All CF cards should be manufactured to be the exact same size. However, a lot of CF card makers seem to be making the larger capacity CF cards slightly larger than the others. As you said, some large-capacity CF cards fit fine. However, others appear to be too big for the Maestro's slot.Originally posted by Darth Gates

With due respect - I disagree that this ISN'T a vox issue - it was pretty obvious after I picked up my 2nd vox that it was clearly part of the issue. The fact I was able to convince the CompUSA manager that it was a Vox mfg flaw is my proof.

Well I've never had any problem closing the door on my Maestro with any of my four CF cards inserted (4 MB Microsoft FunPack card, 64 MB Viking, 128 MB Mr. Flash, 256 MB Mr. Flash).

It's not advisable to do the same to an IBM microdrive unless you really like playing with fire... ;-)Originally posted by Covert

Ditto here. No problem with Lexars, Sandisk, Viking or RCA CF cards. Door closes all the way.Originally posted by Covert

I knew I wasn't going senile yet - there are others who have reported issues w/ the CF cover not closing before - and this wasn't the only thread out there.
It is just much more difficult to control CF door tolerancing due to it having that one degree of freedom movement and being made of plastic (the pseudo-hinge) vs. CF card mfg processes. Some CF cards may be larger dimensionally but it would be hard for me to believe that they are out of spec. because it's much easier to measure and control this than the door dynamics.
Sorry - this is a real subtle argument - but to consider this as NOT a Vox issue at all is IMHO erroneous.
