Actually, I wasn't going to reply at all.
Hah, but you DID
I realized that once I hit the "submit reply" button.
The process of conversion is not well understood as the main actor is God. It may appear that the thumb-twiddler is on their way downstairs but that is only an outward appearance. Remember we are admonished repeatedly not to judge by outward appearances. The guy who is gazing with rapt attention in the front row may have just come from doing a big drug deal and is feeling guilty, while the guy twiddling his thumbs or nodding off in the back row may have spent the night working in an aids hospice or may have spent the night at the hospital intensive care unit with a loved one. As for the hours of preparation by the preacher, it is the spirit that prepares and the preacher only (hopefully) cooperates.
I don't want to turn this topic into some kind of moral relativism. Certainly we should all be paying attention, and paying attention to the proclamation of the Word is the highest and best use of our time at church. But let's not be too hasty to consign the distracted to the lowest depths of eternal fire because we can not infallibly know their circumstances merely from outward appearances.
Oh, and Jesus makes extra trips to make sure He can pick up any and all hitchikers smart enough to ask Him for a ride...
