When Palm announced the Foleo in May, it didn't give a definite release date for this device, just that it would be available at some point this summer. According to an anonymous source, though, the first model in Palm's new Mobile Companion class of products will debut on August 22.

This is supposedly the date this device will go on sale on Palm's web site and its retail stores. The Foleo is expected to be available in Best Buy and other stores starting in November.

Palm has already announced what the price will be: $600, but Palm will offer a $100 rebate at its introduction.

    More About the Palm Foleo

When it debuts, the Foleo will be significantly larger than Palm's handhelds and smartphones, and will have a clamshell design with a 10-inch display and a full size QWERTY keyboard.

It will be designed to work in conjunction with a Palm OS or Windows Mobile smartphone via Bluetooth, plus the Foleo will also have Wi-Fi short-range wireless networking.

It will weigh 2.5 pounds, and Palm says it will offer up to 5 hours of battery life, even when using Wi-Fi .

Even if the release isn't on August 22, I expect the Foleo to debut within a few days of that. Palm is still tinkering with the device, but has set itself a deadline to release before the end of the summer, so late August seems to be the most likely option.

If they're only selling it virtually, we can camp out virtually. ;)

Any chance this gets released in tandem with a new Treo or something?

It's supposedly going to be in Palm Stores on that date, so you can go camp out at one of them if you'd like. The employees'll probably look at you kind of funny, though.

I guess I now know when to plan my next trip to DC or Philly. Neat.

I wonder what other surprises will come once it is released from a software and accessories standpoint.

Despite the higher tax rate in New York, I may have to head up to the Manhattan Palm store on 8/22. I have a reputation to protect and I'm not sure I want to be upstaged by Apple iPhone gearheads. (As far as I know, there are no Palm retail stores in Connecticut.)
