Holy smokes, 12 people browsing today, long live the Palm! :hi2:

Wondering does anyone know whether New York Times still works with Plucker and a Palm. I've been using Jig's instructions posted on this forum long ago. Had great success UNTIL a few days ago when NYT started acting funny, namely making some but not all of its sub-layer stories unavailable from the opening page.

I reinstalled everything... the file size of NYT went from about 25MB to I think 90 MB... but... but... the sub-layer stories are still unavailable from the opening page.

(and I know it belongs in a diff thread but: I SAY THAT the best thing about a Palm for me is: It never, ever rings!)

Smartphones don't ring either if you don't put in a SIM card and you'll have a much easier time with the NYT. ;) Just sayin'

Short of another plucker user still out there to compare results with, this will be hard to troubleshoot. NYT is notorious for changing up their web site and permissions and limiting access unless you are a subscriber.

I don't think anything has changed at NYT in ages. These links from my original instructions and the drilldowns still seem to work just fine:

I'm not sure what the issue is. Unfortunately, I don't have SunriseXP installed or a running Palm device. My advice is to run CCleaner on your PC to delete your browser cache and see what happens.

Alas, no luck... cleaned the registry, reinstalled plucker and even tried an alternate url from the above list. Maybe what is happening is NYT is making it more restrictive to access their content. Does anyone know of a URL for an alternate news source that I could similarly use on the Palm TX?

    Muchas gracias! gski

Did you clear the cache of your default browser? That might make the difference.

I don't know of an alternative for the tx. Calibre does a nice job pulling various news sources, then I send them to my kindle paperwhite.

Tried the cache trick but no luck. Even tried fiddling with the link depth on the NYT file. The file size is big, about 100MB actually, yet very little of it is accessable via Plucker. Miss the old days on this one, because for some years I had a nice functioning news reader with the Sunrise/Plucker setup on the Palm TX.

Just now installed MobiReader but not sure if that can get any news. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!!

I disagree. I do not have a subscription, and as I pointed out above, the mobile links are clearly working. Have you clicked on those links? If you can view them in your browser, then you should be able to get them through SunriseXP/Plucker.

Thanks Jig! And Hook too! :thumbsup:Appreciate the troubleshooting ideas. As I see it, one clue is that the file size of the NYT using Jig's "recipe" has increased; I suspect this increase is due to something NYT is up to. It's increased a lot, even with the same depth chosen via Sunrise, from file sizes routinely about 23MB throughout the past years to whopping 90 to 100 MB sizes starting some weeks back!

Now, the new symptom that has gone along with that clue is that many of the dig-down features now go noplace in Plucker, whereas before you could dig down a couple layers to read the content. Some of the dig-downs still do work. But for most content, for example most of the front page stories, give a descriptor yet are no longer clickable.

I've reinstalled everything to no avail and am just pondering the symptoms and the clues at this point... Appreciate everyone's help! :hi2:

You might see what you can do with a different news source such as NPR (which has no access restrictions) or Christian Science Monitor (which I don't think does). It might be they use large files sizes too or not, but it would give you some tests to see if there is a general problem or just the NYT. By the way, I never used Sunrise and Plucker and no longer remember at all how they worked or how easy it is to aim Sunrise and harvest new links. However, if it is doable, might tell you something.
