Bad idea. I prefer to continue cleaning their droppings rather than having to assist them when their romantic mood kicks in :D

The other problem being that dogs can't see red (or, more accurately, can't distinguish red), so *they* might actually think the sign is an invitation.

That's a clean-out access for county sewer line. It has a hard-covered top that requires a special tool to remove.

This made me extremely happy, both for cause and content. Beware because there's a lovely video which unfortunately begins playing Ice Cream Truck Music immediately, and with great gusto.

Link to story, music and ice cream trucks.

A Lioness Killed the Father of Her 3 Cubs at a Zoo

A lioness killed her longtime mate at the Indianapolis Zoo earlier this week. Zoo officials learned of the incident when they heard an "usual amount of roaring" coming from the lion enclosure on Monday morning. When they went to check on the noise, they found lioness Zuri holding the male lion Nyack by the neck.

"Zoo personnel made every effort to separate the lions, but Zuri held Nyack by the neck until he stopped moving," the zoo said in a statement shared by CNN. Nyack was the father of three of Zuri's cubs and were living together for eight years.

"Our Zoo family is sad to announce 10-yr-old male lion Nyack has died. Earlier this week he was injured in a physical incident with female lion Zuri. We will conduct a thorough review to attempt to understand what may have led to this. Nyack was a magnificent lion & will be greatly missed. We appreciate the support from our community as we cope with the loss," the zoo wrote on Twitter in their official statement on Friday.

Poster's note: as sad as this is, I still can't help but think, "he probably left the seat up one time too many..."

okay, this isn't odd in the sense that most posts in this thread are, but it is an unusually well written article which discusses a complex and important subject.

Meet the Carousing, Harmonica-Playing Texan Who Just Won a Nobel for his Cancer Breakthrough

JAMES ALLISON LOOKS like a cross between Jerry Garcia and Ben Franklin, and he’s a bit of both, an iconoclastic scientist and musician known for good times and great achievements. He also doesn’t always answer his phone, especially when the call arrives at 5 am, from an unfamiliar number.

So when the Nobel Prize committee tried to reach Allison a few weeks ago to inform him he’d been awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in medicine, Allison ignored the call. Finally, at 5:30 am, Allison’s son dialed in on a familiar number to deliver the news. The calls have not stopped since.

Allison’s breakthrough was the discovery of a sort of secret handshake that cancer uses to evade the immune system, and a means to block that handshake—what the Nobel committee hailed as “a landmark in our fight against cancer,” which has “revolutionized cancer treatment, fundamentally changing the way we view how cancer can be managed.” (Allison’s co-recipient was Tasuku Honjo of Kyoto University.) Advances in cancer typically come in 50-year increments; the science that Allison and Honjo helped advance, cancer immunotherapy, has made a generational leap seemingly overnight.
