While the ever present snooping device is a worry, my bigger worry is the lack of transparency, and the utterly poor security of these IoT devices. Many are poorly maintained, and wide open to attack. I'm borderline tempted to create an entirely separate network in my house,so that my main network can't be hacked from the inside due to one of these things. I don't know if I've developed a false sense of security knowing that my windows machines get daily and monthly updates, whereas these IoT devices get updated... *crickets*

I could put the devices on my guest network. Oh, and wouldn't my old android phones function as a perfectly good Google Assistant? I could leave them plugged in and waiting for someone to talk to it.

That would be one way of doing it. :)

I'd have to dismantle my network and rebuild it to have separation like that. And then there's the trouble with having some of my IoT devices connect to my server. Convenience or security.... blech.

Now that I think about it, connecting to my guest network wouldn't work very well. First of all, a lot of the devices are wired (Ethernet), and the guest network is strictly WiFi. Second, some of the devices need to be on the same LAN or they won't work properly. The only solution is that I put my primary computer on the guest network and leave everything else as-is!!! ;)

Sigh....I think I'll just post my DNA, fingerprints, master password, SSN, and DOB online. I'm also changing my router password back to default. Hopefully somebody will hack my system and water my lawn.

“Hey Google, How much do I owe you?”

"Hey Google, Did I forget something?”

“Hey Google, It’s me Snakes. I got the stuff”

“Hey Google, The Wet Bandits are here”

“Hey Google, I'm the man of the house”

I don't know much about networking. Would a guest network supply much security? It might prevent access to your main network, but the device would still have all the issues of continually recording your voice, as well as cataloging all your preferences, etc. Those are the issues I worry about. I ask because I could actually have it connect as a guest on my Fon network I think.

The Google mini doesn't continually record your voice.
