thanks Mi An; as it turned out, a last minute search on xda came up with a thread for someone who had much the same problem as I had (happily, now past tense). so I now have 6.01 running on an unrooted (currently) phone. It turns out Odin (for Samsung devices) and the latest VZW-specific update got me going (with a few unexpected manual reboots required, but I am not complaining).

poor manners earlier -- great to hear you're up and running again!

Very glad to hear you got it working. :newpalm: It's a sickening feeling when it won't do anything. I don't remember ever having a scare like that on Android before. For a few hours, I really thought I turned my precious Z Play into a paperweight.

Marshmallow is a good version, I think you'll like it. One of the reasons I held off upgrading to nougat for so long is that MM users almost universally reported better battery life, though I'm hoping I don't take too much of a hit.

at this point, if I stay stock ROM, then 5.x is the farthest I can go, if I want to keep root privileges. time to explore *that* brave, new world....of alternate ROMs

I was at CES and at lenovo's keynote-I thought of you when I caught a glimpse of the slider keyboard on display.
