    Big news, all:

Within the next few days, the Brighthand forums will undergo major changes. We will be moving off of vBulletin, to a newer, more streamlined platform called XenForo. XenForo was created by programmers who developed vBulletin so there are many similarities and the learning curve will be very small. In fact, it is much easier to use on an intuitive level than vBulletin. And while it maintains all of the tooling you’ve come to expect from vBulletin, the official add-ons list is much more robust. Here are some screen caps of the developmental site:

Once the transition is complete, all the same content/profile info will be there and you'll be able to log in as usual, so you can quickly do what you've always done. In addition to enjoying a simpler, cleaner design, other sites that have made this transition have experienced significant increases in site speed and page load times.

Any questions or concerns you have, please post them here. Many of the moderators have gotten a sneak peek at the new site and can help with answering questions. We'll also be updating the forum document with a full list of changes (terminology, etc.) upon launch. After launch we'll also start up another thread specifically related to issues you experience.

Hope you're as excited as we are for the brand-new Brighthand!

Will the old links still work? I bookmarked a lot of old, useful BH threads. Thanks, and welcome.

I see a "Trophy Points" on the user's info panel. Does this mean we'll have a reputation system again? The old reputation system lent itself to abuse and because of this it was abolished years ago. Some years later there was a thread considering reinstating it, but the Mods announced that it would not happen. Personally, I enjoyed Zippy (that's how we called it), but it would be sad to see it come back only to be taken away yet again.

The old reputation system is not coming back, but users will be able to earn points for different activities in the forum (for example, # of posts, # of likes received), and these points earned will impact user titles. This system will be something that we finalize and introduce following the launch of the new forum design.

If all goes as expected, we're planning to launch the new forum design sometime tomorrow.

While XenForo is very similar to vBulletin (it was developed by the same people), there are some key changes that you should be aware of as you navigate the new forums and use the tools. (This will all be updated in the FAQ as well.)

-- HTML is not allowed in any threads/posts; from here on out, only BB code can be used and displayed. Don't worry, old threads/posts that include HTML will be automatically converted to BB code, so there should be no issues there. If you need a BB code tutorial, check this out: BBCode.org, bbcode users guide and tricks on implementing it

-- Signature: If you have HTML or Javascript in your signature you will have to convert this manually to BB code. XenForo doesn’t render HTML/Javascript in signatures.

-- Image attachments. There are two size options when uploading images to posts: thumbnail and full size.

--Avatar images. XenForo will not allow .bmp images to display as avatars – you’ll need to use .jpg, .png or .gif only). We will be contacting users with .bmp avatars directly.

-- "Posts" are now "Messages". Counts will be carried over from the vBulletin, so everything should remain the same.

-- User Titles. For the time being, these will remain the same as they have been (Newbie, Mobile Enthusiast, Mobile Consultant, Mobile Evangelist, Mobile Deity). The difference is that instead of being calculated based on number of posts, these are calculated based on a point system for different activities (including # of posts, # of likes, etc.). The existing settings will be carried over from vBulletin, so you won't lose any status you've earned, just be aware that you may also see a point value next to your name (at launch, these will all be at 0). We may continue to add new activities that will earn points and graduate you to the next user title.

--User Groups. We've consolidated user groups to make things simpler. The new list: Unregistered/Unconfirmed (Guest), Registered Users, Reviewers, Moderators, Super Moderators, Administrators, Banned Users

Again, please let me know if you have questions!

    Ben

Will there be new features like group chat rooms or improvements to search functions?

A number of us use custom User Titles (and change them periodically). Will that also carry over and still be possible? Not the end of the world if not, but it is fun.
