I also have most used apps on the Toolbar but have needed the Start menu on occasion and with this setup, now more than ever. Setting up Win 10 Pro is nothing like I've done with Win XP Pro> Win 7 Pro. Everything relating to Settings is hidden somewhere other than where I've been accustomed to looking for the past 15 years or so. I don't want all of that Live stuff always connecting and updating; I don't even want an up-to-the-minute Weather app running because I have that on my iPhone. The Shiny is definitely off this machine upgrade experience for me. :vbfrown:

I will check out that link today. Thanks, guys.

*grumpy mode OFF, for the moment* :vboops:

I stopped in at Costco and tried out the Lenovo from my second post. It's nice, but not sure Dad would like it. There were a few HP laptops on his price range that felt good, but haven't there been issues with that brand?

I just need to pull the trigger on something and get this over with.

I've had issues with HP but also with other brands. One HP laptop I purchased for my niece had overheating problems and the GPU had to be reballed. Still, it died a few months later. Then I got an HP for myself and it worked ok for about 2 years, until it no longer did, reasons unknown (diagnose was "requires mainboard replacement"). So then I tried Asus. My personal Asus's battery died after 6 months, then it went through 2 or 3 replacements in as many months until I decided to spend no more in batteries. Now it works only under AC power. My work Asus died within 2 months of purchase, had to be replaced under warranty. It's still working, but the SD card reader reads no more. At work I've seen many brands fail: Toshiba, Lenovo, Acer, etc. In other words, IMO risk of premature failure is mostly brand-independent ;)

Definitely! A parliament of owls... I've been cast as a conservative... Imagine that! (It's just as well, those cast as liberals have to wear kilts in our production!)

I alternate between that and, "I love my job, I love my job, I love my job...."
