Okay, so I murdered my poor $@&^* laptop yesterday. NetB wanted to know how, so this is the story to the best of my recollection:eek:

    HP Pavilion dv1550se Notebook PC
    1.6GHz Intel Centrino Pentium M
    512MB 333MHz DDR System Memory
    80 GB Hard Drive
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    2 1/2 yrs old

It has been running slow for months, driving me nuts. So I went googling for some solutions. I have performed the following:

    Clean Boot
    Clean Disk
    Disk Defrag
    Spybot Search & Destroy (title???)
Wiped out my start menu (mostly)

End result, hardly any sites will load, same with emails. If I'm using AOL, it disconnects every 5 mins, it I use IE7 alone, it can't find any websites. AND it is grossly slower than before I messed with it:(

    All your's Cap'n JC:D

Copy all your important files to a removable drive of some sort.

Blow it away, and reinstall. A machine that sick isn't worth saving.

Agree with HC. If it was running slow in the first place, you're going to do several hours of repair work to get it back up and running, and it probably still won't be much quicker.

And, in the future, post here before you start doing that "clean up" stuff. :)

    Fully agree with Pup.

There are too many 'do it yourself' guides, that can really leave you in the crapper.

There are plenty of IT savvy people here to help you out.

Thanks for your input guys - I appreciate your time.
Would have been nice if HP boxed a restore disk with their products:(

I guess my next decision is if there is much point in doing anything with it - small hard drive, smaller memory, and low end processor - remind why I would want to restore it??

    Thanks again

    It works? Check.
It costs less to obtain restoration cds than to purchase a new computer? Check
You're already familiar with the hardware? Check

    One more thing Cassi,

    My best laptop is:
    7 years old?
    Win2K (Upgraded from 98SE)
    Celeron 600mhz
    10gb hd
    256mb RAM PC100
    No onboard NIC
    PCMCIA Wi-Fi

Clearly, your laptop is worth reinstalling. :newpalm:

Sorry to hear of your 'puter woes, Dear... :(

I'm not sure about yours, but most HPs that I know of have a recovery partition on the hard drive. There's also an app to burn a set of recovery discs from it, which was one of the first things I did with Lappie (4 DVDs.)

Is your recovery partition still intact? If so, you can boot and hit F11 when the HP logo first comes up on the black screen, which will offer a couple of options for recovery. Or, could you still burn a set of discs to use?

OTOH, are you trying to rationalize / justify getting a new machine?

Either way, I'll encourage you - Just tell me which way you want to be misled... ;) :D

Am I being more helpful than GatoRAiD?
