I'm having a big problem with my LG G2. The volume buttons on it only control the ringer volume. This is driving me crazy! Why doesn't it change the notification volume as well? Shouldn't they be synced anyway? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

    welcome to Brighthand

on my Samsung Galaxy S3 (unrooted, stock ROM, Verizon Wireless):
home screen > settings > sound > volume lets me set each independently. a free add-on, Quicker, lets me link notification and ringer volumes.

jigwashere might be able to help specifically with your LG G2, since he has one.

There's no way to configure it on stock G2 that I see. That 3rd party solution sounds promising.

I'm surprised LG messed with that. At least in stock Kit Kat. Settings-->Sound-> tap volumes and the two are linked. In Quick Settings, the free version of Quicker, I think, you can have a separate slider for all your volumes or you can explicitly check a box to cause notifications and ringer volume to be the same (and thus, I would assume, both would respond the same to the volume rocker).
