When I sync'e my PDA today it seemed to delete the last 6 months of data from my Palm Desktop Calendar. Is there any way to recover this data?

Let me work on it and I'll post back. In the meantime, DON'T DO ANYTHING to your Palm or Palm Desktop app!!!!!!!!!!

First off, open My Computer and head to this directory:

    C:\Program Files\Palm\[username]\datebook

where [username] is your Palm's username. (It may be truncated.)

Tell me what the files and filesizes are.

DO NOT OPEN PALM DESKTOP ITSELF!!!!!!!!

EDIT: As to the cause of the problem, did you (or perhaps someone else) issue the Purge command in Date Book? Did you have a lot of records?

As far as the Date Book goes, it's not wise to keep tons of old records; too often I've seen this cause syncing issues. So maybe someone who knows this thought they'd do you a favor....

    Hi,

It was only after we opened Palm Desktop that we saw that the data was missing.

The files that I have are:

    datebook.dat 1298K
    datebook.bak 752K
    datebook.001.dat 752K

I don't beleive a purge command was issued.

    Thanks

    Andrew

Hum, you didn't identify (to my reading) what PDA you had the problem with. I have a similar (more extensive) problem I posted on the PDA forum, it is now on page 2 of the PDA forum, and concerns loss of Datebook data on a Zire 21 and the desktop when I did a "normal" hot sync. A couple of utilities were identified, I haven't tried them yet and can bring that information over to this thread if requested/helpful, or maybe I can give a cross-link.

Hopefully I've not gotten here too late! This is my suggestion:

    DO NOT sync again yet!
    • Go to your Palm directory, then to your (truncated) username directory, then to the \datebook\ directory. You should see a datebook.dat and datebook.bak file (as andrewnaar mentioned.)
    • Rename the datebook.dat file to something like datebook.old or some such.
    • Then copy the datebook.bak file to datebook.dat.
    • Open Palm desktop and see if the missing data is there.
    • If so, set the conduit to Desktop overwrites handheld, then sync. That will get your missing data back, although anything you've changed on the handheld since the last sync will be lost.
The .dat file is the actual data file. The .bak file is the backup of the previous file at the time of the last sync. This also applies to the memos, address book, and other standard PIM applets. The key, when you discover missing data, is to not sync again until you determine if the data still exists (and where.) If you've synced again, the data is likely lost, unless you've backed up your files (which I do regularly - hint hint... ;) )

    HTH,
    Joe

Also verify when viewing Palm Desktop that you are viewing the ALL Category and that the Username displayed is the correct one.

The file sizes are a tip-off:

    datebook.dat 1298K
    datebook.bak 752K
    datebook.001.dat 752K

You keep a meaty datebook. :) (See my screenshot in my second post. ;) )

Something seems odd, though. The backup file is the same size as the data file with the .001 addon, whereas the "original" data file is 1.3 MB. Wonder what gives?

Guess I must have sync'd twice. The .dat and .bak are the same size. Interestingly, the .bak has some data, where as teh .dat does not. And at about 1 Mbyte (as I recall) I'm surprised there isn't some data in the datebook.xyz
