    Question Hot Sync Message

    It's been a while since I received a message like this (in this case it pertains to my Contacts):

    Some Palm OS Desktop records were not copied to the handheld. Attempting to restore from the Palm OS Desktop.

    Desktop = 629, Handheld = 627

    1. What would cause this? BTW, I have added NO new records on the DT in years, only on the HH.

    2. Do I need to actually compare both databases item-by-item () to find the two missing records?

    3. Will another hotsync fix this? If not, how to get all the records synced up?

    Thanks!

    On your desktop, right click the hotsync icon in your system tray. Change your hotsync option for Contacts to Handheld overwrites Desktop.

    Perform a hotsync.

    It is ussually corrupted records, it may be worth it to install DBFixIt.

    Well, I ran DBScan before the successful sync due to it hanging on the Calendar sync. After removing a bunch of deleted calendar records, all went well. I have since run DBFitIt and no problems were detected in the Contacts DB. Strangely, though, DBFitIt indicates 629 records on the HH, whereas the sync log above indicates 627 on the HH and 629 on the DT. Why would this be?

    Which brings me to headcronie's suggestion...wouldn't I lose the 2 extra records on the DT if I had the HH overwrite the DT?

    HC was going on the info that you hadn't entered new records on the DT in years, only on the handheld. If that is true, you probably don't care what those two records are, they might not even be real.

    Chances are those 2 "extra" records are simply deleted records. Database corruption can happen both on the handheld and on the desktop. dbfixit runs a check on the handheld but there is a built in feature to run a check on the desktop. Since you 1) already ran dbfixit and 2) know that you have not ever entered anything on the desktop, I suggest you ignore this and let the handheld overwrite the desktop. If you do a normal hotsync after running dbfixit, you run the risk of 1) putting back whatever corruption dbfixit found and fixed or 2) bringing new corruption over from the desktop to the handheld. Clean data is clean data. Pick a set of clean data. Whack the other data and move on.

    Makes sense; however, I HAVE synced rather recently (although I don't do it real often) and haven't had that message in years, as far as I recall.

    r0k, remember, I ran DBFixIt AFTER the hotsyc. I ran DBScan BEFORE the hotsync and did, in fact, set it to HH overwrites DT (for calendar only since that was where I was originally having some issues.

    Not sure if you answered this or not (if so, I'm not sure I understood you)...why, after hotsyncing and subsequently running DBFixIt, would there be 629 records on the HH according to DBFixIt but only 627 according to the hotsync log (which indicates 629 on the DT)?

    FYI - Just got the same message regarding my Calendar DB (and I have synced successfully since my last post). It shows two more records on my DT than my HH. This really makes me nervous.

    Just synced again and all seems intact (i.e., correct number of records). FWI, I ran DBFixIt BEFORE the aforementioned sync with errors and it indicated no errors in any DB. Go figure.
