Default Sony Clie to Sony Ericsson T616 Bluetooth Setup

I have called Cingular customer service numerous times – they have been nice, but don't seem to know what to do or where to send me to get the configuration set-up to access the internet via the phone (and Bluetooth to Clie). The also don't have the ability/desire to do a callback with the info. I have spent half the time just explaining that I am not interested in their Wireless Express. I see references to initialization strings, etc., on some disc groups, but these folks had to get the info from somewhere. Where is the source of definitive self-help on this issue?

PS: I have downloaded and installed on the Clie the generic drivers for the T616. I am able to use the Clie dial capability to, say, dial the T616 from the Clie Contacts.

Give this a whirl, if you like...<div>
    Service: Cingular GPRS<div>
    Username: WIXDC001@W5.MYCINGULAR.COM [must be uppercase]<div>
Password: ZXY203DC9K0402 [must be uppercase, again: will display as "Assigned"<div>
Connection: [Whatever you have called your Bluetooth connection]<div>

    Tap "Details"<div>
    Connection Type: PPP<div>
    Idle Timeout: 3 minutes<div>
    Query DNS: [checked]<div>
    IP Address: [checked] Automatic<div>

    Tap "Script"<div>
    GPRS4<div>
    GPRS1<div>
    GPRS2<div>
    GPRS3<div>
    GPRS5<div>
    GPRS6<div>
    Wait for: CONNECT<div>
    Delay: 2<div>
    GPRS8<div>
    GPRS9<div>
    Delay: 1<div>
    End<div>

I think that this should work... Please let us know whether it does or not.

    Best wishes,<div>

Thanks -- but did not work. "Error: Incomplete setup. Please check your network settings." Entering a phone number in the the Netfront Preferences page field results instead in a "no carrier" message.

My real question is not a 'how to...' but a 'where do I find..." To Neil and others with config specifics...where did you get this info?

On the Netfront Preferences screen, does the Phone field remain blank? Whose password do dat be?

On the Log In Script page, the entry is formatted such that the first line must be one of the canned instructions selected from a dropdown menu. I improvised by entering a Delay.

I finally was sent to a tech support individual for Cingular, and apparently I need a package called the "Data Connect Phone Kit"
    http://www.cingular.com/business/wireless_web_solutions
I am still dubious about that because it's $40 and its off of the business solutions page (I ain't a business). So, still searching for an answer.

Sorry- misread what you wanted! Basically, as long as you have your phone already paired to your Clie, then the script below should work. In this instance, although I am in the UK, I configured my T3 to connect to the Cingular service, and then copied the script from it. Basically, the T3 has a PhoneLink app, which stores the connection information for all the major services and providers around the world, and I have not heard of any situations where it has been incorrect. This is why I am surprised it did not work. If you have not linked your phone, then this could be one reason, but, I am sure you have done that.<div>
I have just searched on Google for you, and it came up with this link:
    http://navasgrp.home.att.net/tech/cingular/gprs_setup.htm
which seems to have the same setup, by users a number as an init. string, rather than a script- I used a sequence similar to this on my old SJ30, so this may work for you.
Alternatively, you may like to try:
    http://toadstool.se/journal/2003/05/28/setting_up_cingular_gprs_on_the_sony_ericsson_p800.php
It appears as if this connection works, judging by the number of thankful posts underneath.

I hope that these will help you- you certainly do not need to spend $40 on a piece of software to do this!

From original poster: You would not believe how many 'answers' I have received from the wireless phone companies. I am beginning to believe that I am encountering the extent of my own ignorance—heretofore limitless.

The latest answers I receive from Cingular and T-Mobile are that it is not possible to access the 'full' internet via Bluetooth to a wireless phone – only the 'mobile' web. It does not sound like this is area-specific either. From postings on this site, I had not noticed discussion of a major distinction (other than speed and range) between the WiFi and Bluetooth-via-a-phone. Sony customer service says that is not correct – one gets full access via Bluetooth (with the caveat about quirky page formats etc.)

What's going on? Is this a regional thing (Dallas, TX)? Who doesn't know what they are talking about? If the wireless reps don't know that a feature exists, how can they set me up with it? This is beginning to become an Abbott-Costello routine.

The only way in which there could be problems were if the service they were offering was a "walled garden"- you can only access sites which they have previously vetted.

T-Mobile does not do this, at least, not in the UK- what you are aiming to do is use the phone as a wireless modem- your PDA handles the browsing, and so does not have the technical limitations a phone would have. I am <b>extremely</b> puzzled why a company repeatedly denies it is possible- I am sure it can be done, and that people do do it. I am surprised that the settings either I posted, or, recommended, are not working- it seems as if you will get no joy out of the company, though.

I am sure it can be done- I have only come across one service provider who has a secured walled garden, and that is Hutchinson 3, which is a third generation network, anyway, and spends more time down than up, as far as I can see.

Sorry I cannot be of more help- I would have expected the settings I offered to work, and it puzzles me why they don't- I will think some more on this, and see whether I can come up with anything of use.

    Best wishes,
    Neil

From original poster: I am coming also to the conclusion that using the term 'modem' as I have may not be appropriate. Sony tells me that it is not possible for a Clie to connect using the phone as a modem via Bluetooth in the sense of the word that we dinosaurs envision of the ol' handset in the cradle thing. In other words, one can't sign-up with, say, AOL and dial-up with the only wireless cost being the use of rate plan minutes.

    Okay- some basics!

Dial-up v. broadband in mobile phones
Dial-up is the equivalent of GSM connection- you dial a certain number, and this gives you access on a pay per minute basis. It is reasonably slow 9.6kbps, but, you only pay per minute. It is possible to do this over a Nokia, so I do not see why not a Sony, as it is the service provider who will supply the connection and the necessary numner

Broadband is the equivalent of a GPRS connection. It is "always on", but requires an init string or script to link onto it. It transfers at 14.4kbps, which is the same as WAP, but uses the connection more effectively, as it is packet-switched, rather than circuit-switched.

What you are wanting to do, it access the Internet on your PDA, over your mobile phone. Thus, the term "modem" is entirely correct. The information I thought you were looking for was a GPRS script, but, I may have been wrong, as you are talking of paying per minute, rather than per kilobyte.

I see what you are getting at with the modem problem, though- your IAP will be your mobile phone provider, rather than AOL- you use your phone connection as the connection to the Internet. AOL, as your home ISP, will not be used on the connection on the Clie- it will be Cingular as an IAP. To my mind, this actually makes things easier, than harder!

Hope this clears some things up- feel free to post back for more information / ask further questions.

Okay, I will chime in here with some questions as well.

I use a Nokia 3650 to connect to the Internet via GPRS. I can do this over bluetooth from a laptop: enter *99# for the phone number, blank user name and password. No problem.

I can connect over GSM through a dial up account through another ISP - it is essentially just a phone call over the phone. Again, no problem.

HERE is the problem. In the Palm OS the network settings for a PPP connection require a name and password. Leaving the user name blank causes an error when the Palm connects. But, T-Mobile does not accept a username and password in the GPRS dial up connection.

I called T-Mobile. They will support dial up connections via bluetooth for PC's but not Palm devices, etc.

Does anyone know how to force the Palm to allow a PPP connection with blank password and username?

I haven't tried this in a while, but when I had the same problem, I used a blank space for the un/pw and that did the trick.
