Smartphone for people with low vision?
I have a vision problem and am interested in any recommendations on a new smartphone. The bigger the screen the better, but are there phones out there that the font size can easily be increased to around 20 - 24 pt. I'm aware of the siri feature on the iPhone 4s, but didn't think the screen was large enough for everything else. Any and all help is appreciated!

Welcome to Brighthand, dpjj4
I recall reading that if an Android phone is rooted, one can set font
size, although some apps don't play well with that. Sorry not to have more, specific info.My useful BH links -- BH FAQS/repair options/digitizer discussions

You might actually want to consider a small tablet: specifically, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. It allows you to make calls, with a headset, and has the largest screen of any voice capable device as far as I'm aware.

Re: Smartphone for people with low vision?
I came across this app for Android phones and if I end up with a smartphone using that format, I'll definitely be loading it first. It's called VisAssist and it would be great for reading menus and other small print items while out and about. Still looking for input and tips for low vision applications. Thanks, Duane

Re: Smartphone for people with low vision?
OK, so I've done a little more research and found an app which so far is only for android phones. It's called VisAssist and looks like it would be very helpful for people with limited vision in a restaurant or place where they need to enlarge whatever they need to read. Still looking for apps and other info about smartphones which will help people in a similar situation.
BTW, I posted this yesterday via the quick reply tab and it never showed up. What did I do wrong?

Welcome to Brighthand, dpjj4.

Your post yesterday was automatically moderated by the forum software because it was your second post and contained an outside link. Those circumstances are usually exploited by spammers. Your post tonite showed in the thread because it didn't contain the link. Posting the name of the app is good enough for members to search for it if they want to know more about it.

Re: Smartphone for people with low vision?
Sounds like you could use Siri on the iPhone. Apple made a big deal about Siri and it's use for people with site problems. Here is an article I read about blind people that used their iPhones to live totally independent lives. They had some pretty cool apps. I know they used apps like Dragon Diction to "type" out what they said that need to be given to someone, texted, emailed. etc.
I think Android has it's version of Siri also. Not sure tough. Hop that helps some.

Re: Smartphone for people with low vision?
Probably needs a combination of a large phone with a good voice software.
The Galaxy Note sounds like it up your alley along with the HTC One X, Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Nexus. You can also use these along with Google Voice Search and Samsung S voice.
The Nexus in particular if you need voice software because Google Now which is exclusive to Jellybean is exceptional.
The ideal solution would be the incoming Galaxy Note 3 as that would combine a huge screen with Jellybean and Google Now, plus a huge battery.I am @guamguy on Twitter.
