Which ever has the HD resolution and a large screen. Plus at least a dual core to help push the pixels around.

I suggest Samsung Galaxy S III. It has bigger screen-4.8”. It has higher display contrast and better sunlight legibility. It has quad core so videos won’t blur. It has gorilla glass so no worry about scratches. It has a good camera too. Videos are shot with 30fps. So your videos will have good quality.

Just a note - from everything I've read the US version of the Samsung S III will be using a dual core...

i don't think the answer is as simple as just choosing any device with hd. there's still a lack of clarity if the sensor is too small (too many pixels squeezed into too small an area need much more light to get a clear image), there's still an advantage if the device has optical zoom, and having a more powerful processor can counteract artifacts such as rippling, tearing, haze and choppy transitions. with that said, i don't have an answer and i'm eager to hear your suggestions.

prior to hd being standard, the most helpful thing for determining video recording quality was just to watch videos shot with each camera. sometimes good sounding specs can turn out horrendous video, but that really is an experience from a few years back. i have no idea how good or bad modern smartphones are for shooting video.
