It does have to be reprogrammed, but that can be done automatically. Don't recall the details, but when I put my VZW branded TP2 on PPC, I dialed some number and the system did the programming OTA.

That would be my guess. However, it is just a guess. As I said, I never had to do anything, but ot could be because it's AT&T and not an MVNO, or it could be that the Gophone SIM drives everything. My phone is unlocked-- in fact, it never was locked.

LG Nexus 4: AT&T (Gophone), Android 4.4.2, stock and unrooted-- and probably staying that way.

My sister is delaying her smartphone.

Sometime next year, I am planning to try this. Right now, I am focusing on getting the Samsung Galaxy Pro (unlocked).

    Hey guys,

I am helping one of my friends. She wants to have a smartphone but needs to stikc with Verizon, family plan. She wanted to get the iPhone but she knows it's going to be pretty expensive cause of the data plan. I was going to suggest her to get an android smartphone but I am not sure data plan.

Is there any way to get a android smartphone without Verizon data plan?

    Thanks guys.

Not that I can think of, unfortunately. If she were on AT&T, she could get an unlocked Android phone AT&T doesn't carry, and dodge their data plan requirements that way, but Verizon doesn't allow any non-Verizon phones on their network.

    Two things:

    1. There are rumors that Verizon may introduce a 'family' data plan with one 'bucket' of data shared amongst family members.

    2. I don't think the data plan costs of adding a phone to the family plan are excessive or much different than other carriers. Of course it's relative, and more expensive than no data plan; but that's true of almost any smartphone scenario.

    Hey guys,

Just to update you guys. My sister and I discussed this, and she agreed to pay the $20 monthly data plan. And I got her the HTC Vivd today as a birthday present.
