Yeah, I was a little surprised at how little data consumption I've had so far given I am using Skyfire. Admittedly, I'm not streaming. I'm going to have more leisure time this week-end, so I think I'm going to see what more extensive use of skyfire and Ovi files and things like that produces.

I assume that whatever formatting skyfire's server sends to you is compressed.

I'm don't stream, either. Also, I'm only downloading email headers -- no attachments, either.

I've only had my TP2 since the beginning of the year, so I should probably wait a few months to really see how my data usage turns out.

It sounds as though Opera Mini, Blazer, maybe Skyfire only give you the essentials of a Website, that way they only use a minimum of Data. I guess the point is that if you were on a budget or had a PAYG plan like Hook, there are ways and things that you can do to still be "always connected".

Skyfire uses a proxy, so even though you get the full web, you get it smooshed to a smaller file size. IIRC Opera Mini does that too.

Blazer, on the other hand, gives you just the facts.

I spent one day using my smartphone extensively as my sole working device and all internet and email activities, from about 8am until about 11pm. I'm not saying I was using the phone all of that time, but I went out of my way to use it and kept my laptop in the bag. And I used 3G for everything even though wifi was available. It was pretty solid use from about 5pm until about 11pm.

First to note is that my battery didn't drop to two pancakes (what I call the battery indicator graphics) until 11pm. 2nd, I did manage to use about 5 MB of data in one day. I did a lot of email, sending pictures, internet surfing, Brighthand, getting information abut Olympic events I was watching that I didn't understand, etc. Some of that data was chomped up by email with pics that was being sent reply all so the pictures kept being quoted (I did it on purpose to get a feel for sending pics back and forth).

I figured out that if I did this daily,a $30 data plan might look ok-- except, wait a minute, everything I was doing was stuff I don't actually need to do. Darn, I guess no data plan for me.

I'm glad I had a chance to see what using 3G data more extensively is like at very minimum cost to me (about 10 Mb of my original 100 Mb of data purchased last April, retail value about $2.00). I already knew it was not something I needed (all least now), but I came away with perspective I didn't have before on why people do this. I'm sure some who do it don't really need to either, but I see that this is probably very useful to many. Brief and limited though this has been, it will allow me to think more deeply about options in the future and to discuss the issues from a more informed perspective. Thanks everyone for your comments and putting up with my thrashings.

Tomorrow I go home and back to PDA 2.0 on my gangster --no, Pirate-- phone.

    Until the next time...

Will be interesting in seeing how your PDA 2.0 usage changes; your experiment seems similar to the one I did with the mobile web server for MMM; little did I know that experiment would become the real deal. I don't think a data plan would be it for you, but I do think you see an avenue of flexibility you might not have seen before - and depending on the context, might be more willing to take it.
If your smartphone is so smart, then why are you spending so much time learning it? Shouldn't it learn you and adapt to your leanings?

I'm guessing I will, in some contexts, be much more willing to *not* wait for wifi and my laptop if there is something useful --or sufficiently fun-- I want to do. Heck, I've been rolling over the same data package for a year. Throwing down $20 twice a year would be fine too. We shall see.

Probably other things I can't quite foresee yet.
