A Palm User's PPC Experiences
I started in PDAs with a Seiko DF-2200. Elegantly thin. Went thru the Casio B.O.S.S line, which allowed backups to my PC and, via some rather fun code I wrote, a means of keeping my Profs/OfficeVision calendar in sync back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Then I had a little device that docked with a Motorola Startac phone for awhile. I got into the Palm family with IIIxe. Moved to the M505 for the color, to the M515, then the Tungsten T1 and currently the Tungsten T3.
I have also purchased a PPC. Specifically, a Dell X50V.
This thread will be blog-like; however, being it is a forum, there will be interaction, and that is a good thing!

My initial week with the X50V was spent simply toying with it. Installing, configuring, hard resetting it. Trying to understand it.
Several initial impressions have been gathered as well as a plan for subsequent plans.
A bit of desktop background might be in order. I run XP/Pro on a laptop. While I have Outlook and IE available to me, and kept current, I use Thunderbird and Firefox. I sync my Palm T3 with the Palm desktop; not Outlook.
As for computing philosophy, well, I've earned my living for 30+ years in various aspects of professional IT (called DP back then). I've long outgrown any hacker mentality; however, am ammenable to structured customization. What this means is that I use computing as a tool (a fun one, yes) and as such it needs to be positioned to be easily upgraded (or migrated). Extensive customization sometimes precludes that goal.

The current plan:
Address the X50V on 5 functional areas. - Internet
- Media
- Utilities
- PIMS
- Applications
Internet includes Web, Email, IM, and alternative browsers such as NetFront.
Media includes Images, Video, Audio, PDFs.
Utilities includes Today screens and managers, Backups, File Managers.
PIMS should be self-explanatory.
Applications include the add-ons I like.

I have purchased two Applications for the PPC: Spb Pocket Plus & Resco Utility Package. More on those a bit later.

The other apps I am considering are a PIM replacement (Agendus Fusion, Pocket Informant, Pocket Breeze), a Backup, NetFront, HandyShopper, iSilo, etc.
Well, that is enough brain dump for right now.
Subsequent posts will dive in deeper on the compare/contrast of the T3/X50V, the software choices, the basics of PPC-land, and so forth.

Well, after sitting in an airport for hours and hours (and hours and hours), delayed by inclimate weather, and listening to MP3s for all that time (plus the additional hours in the air once the airport did open), I can unequivocally state that having easily replaceable batteries is worth the price of admission.
Get with the program, Palm!

As does virtually every electronic device except the Palm PDA line and the iPod.
