Default Verizon Doubling the Cost of Tethering the Droid

Verizon has promised that Motorola Droid users will be able to tether their smartphone at some point next year. This carrier has also revealed that it's going to ask customers to pay twice the regular price for this service.

This carrier's Broadband Access Connect service regularly costs $15 a month, but for Droid users the price is going to be $30 a month.

This will likely send many people to third-party options like June Fabrics PdaNet for Android, which provide tethering without the monthly fee. These, however, violate the user's terms of service.

Read a ReviewWhat Is Tethering?
Tethering is the process of using a mobile phone to provide wireless Internet access to another computer, usually a laptop. Carriers have different names for this -- like Verizon's "Broadband Access Connect" service -- but the generic term is tethering.

Some smartphones come with this feature built in, but not all. And wireless carriers have a wide range of opinions toward it. Still, there are third-party applications for virtually every smartphone platform that add this feature, no matter what the carriers want.

Default Re: Verizon Doubling the Cost of Tethering the Droid

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Verizon should be selling the SERVICE. If I want to use it in a certain way (with an overall limit if I have to); then I should be able to do it. $30 is a whole extra data plan!
