Stop Press!

Feeling brave. Going for T-Mobile version first, although they say that they're not responsible if doesn't work.

I'll work on my other PC while my main one does the upgrade. Wish me luck.

OMG, it's green!

It's done. ROM upgraded from 1.something to 3.something. Went without a hitch, took about 15 mins. I've now got the T-Mobile branded Win Mob 6.1. I'll decide whether to change the HTC version or a custom ROM another time.

Meanwhile, thanks for your input.

Congrats, Colin - Glad it went well!

I'm still curious, of course, what happens if (yes, that's "if") you use another ROM image and flash it again.

Oh, forget it - I'll never hit 100%, so I'm considering myself a WinMobster now.

I doubt I'll try a different image; it's not wortht the hassel if something goes wrong, and the benefits will be minor for me now. Maybe if I get continued problems with this ROM (eg the browser has been locking up) then I'll try an alternative. But for now, if it ain't broke...
