Most Popular Smartphones of October

Each month, Brighthand publishes a list of the smartphones and other devices our readers are most interested in. This report is compiled based on the number of views each product page receives, so every time someone clicks on a product they're giving it a vote in these monthly rankings.

This listing doesn't necessarily indicate which models are the best selling, just which ones Brighthand readers are most interesting in learning more about during the preceding four weeks.

This month's list is dominated by new and upcoming models, reflecting the large number of phones that have been announced in recent weeks.

1. HTC Hero (Previously #1) - The Hero is an Android-based phone that's available from Sprint and in Europe, but in different designs. Both versions have a tablet shape with a WVGA touchscreen, mobile broadband, Wi-Fi, and a 5.0 MPx camera. Read a Review
2. Samsung Moment (New) - The Samsung Moment is a smartphone running Google's Android OS now available from Sprint. It has a sliding keyboard, 3G, Wi-Fi, and a 5 MPx camera, but its real claim to fame is a beautiful AM-OLED display. Read a Preview
3. HTC HD2 (New) - The HTC HD2 will be a very high-end Windows phone with a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen and 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. It will run Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro, but have a new version of HTC's custom user interface layered on top. This device will have 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, microSD card sot, and much more. 4. Nokia N900 (New) - The Nokia N900 will run a new version of Nokia's open-source Linux-based operating system, Maemo 5. Like its predecessors, the earlier Internet Tablets, it will be a slider with a large WVGA touchscreen and a landscape-oriented keyboard. However, unlike its predecessors, this is a smartphone with HSPA 3G. It also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Read a Preview
5. LG Versa (Returning) - The LG Versa is a touchscreen phone with a removable QWERTY keyboard. The device uses a proprietary operating system with a 3D touch interface. It supports Verizon's EV-DO mobile broadband service, and also comes equipped with Bluetooth and a 2 megapixel camera. Read a Review
6. HTC Touch Pro2 (Previously #2) - This high-end Windows phone is a business powerhouse, and sports a wide array of features, including a large WVGA touchscreen, a QWERTY keyboard, GPS, mobile broadband, and Wi-Fi. It's available now from Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. AT&T also has a version re-named the Tilt2. Read a Review
7. RIM BlackBerry Storm 9530 (Previously #10) - The Storm is the first BlackBerry with a touchscreen. This is genuinely the centerpiece of the device, as it is also the first BlackBerry without a built-in keyboard. The 9530 is Verizon's version of this device, which offers EV-DO and support for GSM networks, including HSDPA. Read a Review
8. Nokia E63 (Previously #6) - The E63 is an inexpensive, Symbian S60 device that uses a tablet shape, with a front-facing QWERTY keyboard and a 2.4-inch display. Despite its consumer focus it also sports features for business users. Read a Review
9. Nokia E71 and E71x (Previously #3) - The Nokia E71 is a Symbian S60 smartphone with a 320-by-240-pixel QVGA screen and QWERTY keyboard in a body that is only 10mm thick. It comes with Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3.2 megapixel digital camera with Carl Zeiss optics and auto focus, and a microSDHC memory card slot. The E71x is a special version just for AT&T. Read a Review
10. Samsung Solstice (Returning) - This consumer-oriented smartphone from AT&T has a 3-inch touchscreen and uses Samsung's TouchWiz user interface. Definitely an interesting list.

No Pre, No Iphone, and three each of HTC and Nokia.

Always gets me how many CDMA handsets show up on this list. I wonder how many more that will be next month.

New phones always shoot up fast in the list and stay up for a month or two.

What interests me most are the phones that have been out for much of the year, and can stay pretty much up there. The phones with the most staying power.

In this list, you have the Blackberry Storm, the Nokia E71 and E63.

People will read the review of the CDMA version as long as much of it is valid on the GSM version. Hence the HTC Hero, Touch Pro 2 and the Blackberry Storm.

In the Storm's case, the 9500 Storm is every bit as identical as the 9530 except for the lack of the Verizon red wall paper, and GSM and 3G UMTS support. While the Storm has its issues, surprisingly its one of the most popular---maybe the most popular Blackberry that isn't a Curve---both in the US and international markets.

The simple fact you got that much Nokias up there consistently, especially the E71 and E63 tells me this board has every bit as big of international readership as US and Canadian readership.
