Default Couple Android Questions

I am in the market for a new cell phone (VZW). Have always been a Palm person and was considering WinMo, and thought I would like the TP2 or the Imagio, but really not so much, blackberry is out due to exchange server at the office. And now I am looking the Android OS.

Over the weekend I went to best buy and they were telling me about the Eris coming out soon and it was very similar to the Hero (Sprint). They let me play around with the Hero for some time and I really liked it ALOT. Not to mention if the price is true it will be free after my NE2 discount (always a good selling feature).

But I have a couple of concerns about it only having Android 1.5.

1. What is everyones thought about HTC coming out with a 2.0 update for it?

2. Does Android 1.5 work with exchange server without any additional software?

Thanks

Android 1.5 doesn't, but the Hero comes with add-on software with Exchange ActiveSync.

Before you jump on the HTC Droid Eris, you're not interested in the Motorola Droid, also coming to Verizon this week?

I dont know, I really like the form factor of the Hero (Eris) and the Trackball on face of the device as opposed to opening the keyboard slider is really appealing to me. Plus the fact that I would have to spend an extra $100 for the Droid. However exchange is a must for me so it really will depend on what HTC does with the Eris and how long it will be before Android 2.0 comes out. I guess I will go to the store and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply Ed.

If I am not mistaken, I think you can actually set up Blackberry to work with an Exchange server and have push-based email.

Yes it will, but it requires additional software on the server to have full OTA sync with Calendar and Contacts, and I want it to work out of the box. So that is why BB is out.

I did go to the VZW store and I love the HTC Eris over the Moto Droid. I can not stand the look of the droid and the Sense overlay on the HTC is great. So I think I will be getting one this weekend!
