Default BlackBerry OS 5.0 Upgrade Now Available for the Original Storm

Research in Motion has released an operating system upgrade for Verizon's version of the original BlackBerry Storm. This brings a number of improvements to the first touchscreen-oriented smartphone from RIM.

BlackBerry Storm 9530 for Verizon

Enhancements in BlackBerry OS 5.0 include tabbed web browsing, flagged emails, and a greatly improved Maps application.

With this upgrade, the original Storm runs the same operating system version as the BlackBerry Storm2, which will be released on Wednesday.

Users of this Blackberry can update their smartphones to the new OS 5.0 software directly off RIM's website, through the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, or from Verizon Wireless' download site.

There is no charge for this system software upgrade.

A Quick Overview of the BlackBerry Storm
This is the first BlackBerry with a touchscreen, which is 3.25 inches and 360 by 480 pixels. This display takes the place of the keyboard typically found on RIM models.

This model has mobile broadband and Bluetooth, but not Wi-Fi. The upcoming Storm2 will include Wi-Fi, and a re-designed touchscreen.

Kudos to RIM for getting this out before the release of the Storm2. To be honest, I was expecting this company to hold back this OS upgrade in hopes that impatient people would get the new model just to have the new OS.

But now current owners of the Storm will be able to decide if this software upgrade is enough of an improvement for them, or if they want a hardware update, too.

p.s. be sure to check out Brighthand's "first impressions" review of the BlackBerry Storm2.

I'm very pleased they got this out - it had a made a night and day difference for some performance and other frustrations with my Storm. Right now, I see no reason I would want to upgrade (the screen on mine doesn't bug me).
