Default Verizon Accidentally Leaks the Droid's Specifications

Verizon doesn't plan to unveil the Droid until next week, but this carrier has given the world an in-depth sneak peek: it briefly put the official pages describing this Android-based smartphone on its website, revealing all the details.

Motorola DroidVery little of this information is new, but this leak confirms what the rumors have been saying.

This smartphone will be named the Droid by Motorola. It will be a slider, with a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard. It will have a 3.7-inch, 854-by-480-pixel (WVGA+) capacitive touchscreen with haptic feedback.

It is going to run Google Android 2.0 on a 550 MHz processor, and will come with a suite of applications that can wirelessly synchronize with this company's services, including Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, and Maps.

Verizon is promising advanced speech recognition to allow user to make calls and search the Web with voice commands.

For professionals, the Droid will offer Exchange ActiveSync and a Microsoft Office file viewer. For everyone, it will have video and audio software.

Android is known for its very powerful WebKit-based web browser, and the newest version is going to support HTML5, plus Adobe Flash 10.1 when it's released in 2010.

Verizon is going to bundle a 16 GB microSD card, and users will have the option of switching this out with a 32 GB card when these come on the market next year.

More Hardware Features
This smartphone will support Verizon's high-speed mobile broadband EV-DO Rev. A service. It will also include Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth for short range connections to the Internet and accessories.

Motorola DroidThe Droid will have a 5 megapixel camera, with auto-focus and dual LED flash. This will be able to handle high-resolution images and 720-by-480-pixel video at up to 24 fps.

It is also going to include a 3.5 mm headset jack, a GPS receiver, and an accelerometer.

This Motorola model will have a 1400 mAh battery, which Verizon says will be good for either 385 minutes of talk time or up to 270 hours of stand-by time.

Overall, this device will be 4.6 inches wide, 2.4 inches wide, and 0.5 inches thick (116 x 60 x 14 mm).

Pricing & Availability
This Motorola model is scheduled to be formally unveiled on October 28, at an invitation-only event hosted by Verizon. However, this wireless carrier has made it clear that the debut of this smartphone is going to happen in November, so this event won't be a launch party.

Pricing is not yet known, but all the advertising for this Android device has compared it to the iPhone, which suggests that it won't be significantly more expensive than Apple's smartphone, which sells for $200 with two-year contract.

Additional details on the Motorola Droid can be found in the official datasheet, which was on this smartphone's site when it was briefly available.

Whoops; but this is something they could spin for good. I wonder how astue their social media and PR persons are to making something like this work out for good.

Hi,

The 550 MHz processor sounds a little underwhelming and the rest of the specs are not something that stand out either.

Interested in reviews once this comes out.

Iphone killer? I guess we will see, many have tried.

Default Screen Resolution

I suspect that the extra screen area beyond WVGA -- that 54 x 480 pixel area -- is going to be dedicated to the touch-sensitive Home, Back, Menu, and Search buttons, and it won't be usable for anything else.

The maximum resolution supported by Android is WVGA, and full support for a WVGA+ display would require significantly modifying the OS and bundled applications. Third-party developers would also have to modify their apps to run on this model.

I've talked to Motorola about this issue, and they seem very committed to not fragmenting Android, which is why I think the screen area available for software will be WVGA.

There's nothing in the specifications of the iPhone that make it sound like it's going to be a big success, either (HVGA screen, no keyboard, only on AT&T). The devil is in the details. If Google, Motorola, and Verizon can make a device that's as easy to use, useful, and as well advertised as the iPhone, they'll have a hit on their hands.

Its also not a very pretty phone, if the images in the OP are what we can expect. And the commercial I've seen really doesn't make me want to get it. Its not the "iDon't" part. That's all true, for the most part. Its the hacked-up last part. One blog summed it up: "If you want to be a l337 hax0r you need this phone!!" And they meant it facetiously.

I like what Ed said about the iPhone really having nothing in the specs that is spectacular, and I agree, being an owner. The devil truly is in the details.

Personally, one of the things about Windows (and Windows Mobile) that puts me off is the huge number of settings available to the user. Its boggling! I expect the same issue with Android and the apps available for it. The l337 hax0r will love the thing, but the average user won't know how to get the best experience.

From what I've heard, those images don't come close to doing it justice. Apparently it's ridiculously gorgeous.

Also, with Google/VZW/Moto all working together to optimize this phone, it should be the best in class for Android. Whether that bodes well for Android is another story.

My point was, going strictly off these specs, the hype of this being an Iphone killer feels to be a stretch.

What I mean here is, I do not see a lot of users, happy with their current phone, making the switch to this.

People not happy with their current phone, I do see this as tempting.

Does look nice and the big screen is always a plus.
