Default RoadSync 1.0 Brings Exchange ActiveSync to Android Smartphones

After six months in beta, DataViz has completed work on the first version of its Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync client for Android. RoadSync 1.0 is now available for purchase through the on-device Android Market.

Unlike many of its competitors, the Android OS doesn't include software for syncing with Exchange, but RoadSync adds this feature.

This app provides secure, wireless, and direct push synchronization with Microsoft Exchange Server, and supports corporate e-mail, calendar, contacts, and attachments.

RoadSync also offers HTML e-mail, message flags, meeting accept/decline, appointment reminders, a calendar widget, and full contact details including photos.

It even supports the Exchange 2007 Auto-Discovery service, and allows users to set a schedule for synchronizing their inboxes, with peak and off-peak settings.

When Microsoft Office files come in as e-mail attachments, they can be viewed with DataViz Documents To Go 2.0, which offers a free viewer for Microsoft Word and Excel files.

The full version of DocsToGo ($29.99) allows viewing, editing, and creating of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, plus a PDF viewer.

RoadSync Pricing & Availability
RoadSync is now available exclusively through the Android Market as a 2-week free trial which can be permanently activated by purchasing an unlock key for an introductory price of $9.99 (regularly $19.99).

Supported devices include the T-mobile G1, T-Mobile myTouch 3G, T-Mobile Pulse, HTC Dream, HTC Magic, HTC Hero, HTC Tattoo, Huawei U8220, Motorola Cliq, Samsung Galaxy, Samsung Behold II, Samsung Moment, Acer Liquid and other devices running Android OS.

Default Exchange ActiveSync and Android

I've been suggesting for a while that Google build Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) into Android, in the same way it's a part of Windows Mobile, webOS, etc. This I realized something: this is very unlikely to ever happen.

Google gives Android away for free, while Microsoft charges a licensing fee for its sync technology. If EAS was built into Android, Google would either have to start charging for the whole OS, or eat Microsoft's fee.

What this says to me is that Exchange synchronization is going to be on a device-by-device basis. Some Android-based models will have it, like HTC's products. But for those that don't, the users are going to have to turn to third-party solutions like RoadSync.

I have been having good results using Road Sync beta. Now that it is released the $9.99 is a bargain if you need it for work email.

According to this http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/...t-walkthrough/ MS Exchange support may be built into Eclair (2.0).

It's not clear yet if Android will be getting Exchange ActiveSync, or something that acts like it many ways. For example, the latest report (see here) says nothing about synchronizing calendars or to-dos.
